What I'd like to know is if Pro8 re-centered the lens. If so, they'd be one up on all of us.

I would think with the ground glass markings its very likely they did.
I would kind of expect it for the price tag. That would be a very nice camera though. No doubt about that.
A couple ?s unrelated to the topic questions Rick....
They claim 1:58. What do you think the super duper gate's aspect is?
Are they being conservative with the expansion?
Also ,didnt you say a nizo is hard to file out?
Ive been looking for nice camera with multiple speeds ,time lapse and a good lens and the nizo seems to fill the bill for a good price. They seem to be a bit cheaper than say the canon 814xls.
If the Nizo is impossible to widen I may still go with one and keep it stock.

People here have done calculations and somewhere around 1.58 is about as wide as it can get. (Not bad considering regular super 8 is aout 1.33). With Sleep Always we masked it to about 1.85 as that is a standard 35mm letterbox and is pleasing to the eye.edgebsl wrote: They claim 1:58. What do you think the super duper gate's aspect is?

No problem widening the Nizo's, just watch for the tiny springs in the gate assembly when you take it off. Easy to lose, or worse.

Well, glad we got that sorted out then! Here in the UK (and I guess other places have similar) we have the Trading Standards department in local authority government where we can complain about the things traders say and do. Clearly any company claiming to have invented or introduced a new wide super 8 format would be breaching the law and should rightly receive the attentions of Trading Standards.
Go back and sit down sleep Always and Pro8!

Just for the record, we did erroneously claim that super-duper 8 was a "new" format when we first launched our website, since we found no evidence that others had done it - Film-Thurso's accomplishments in this department were so huge that they were somehow missed by our radar. (If anyone searches "super 8 extra" they'll also find this huge object which somehow missed their radar).FILM-THURSO wrote:Well, glad we got that sorted out then! We have since (many months ago) removed the word "new" from our website, having learned, mainly through this forum, of others experimenting with the same idea. Our website mainpage currently says "Sleep Always is the first feature shot in "super-duper 8", a wide-screen 8mm film format." Hopefully that is acceptable to the world police as we have never had any intention of making false claims.
Later on another page of our site we say: "Super-duper 8 is a wide-screen super 8 film format. The concept behind super-duper 8 is identical to that behind super 16: expose the far edge of the film, normally reserved for sound tracks, thereby capturing a wider image." No false claims here.
Something I have posted elsewhere, which I will repeat again here, comes from super-8-know-everything (and I mean that well) Martin W. Baumgarten, who informed me that:
"It's also known as the Super 8-B format (B for the german word
Breitwand, meaning Widescreen) as via its inventor Ruedi Muster of Muster Film & Video Technik in Switzerland. It's original inception is from conversion of the BOLEX H-8 and H-8 Reflex cameras, and then moved over to the cartridge loading cameras."
Unfortunately no date was mentioned related to this, but it seems Mr. Muster might claim to be the "inventor" here, so Film Thurso's world police now have a culprit to chase down. You could also arrest Martin Baumgarten as an accessory to a false-claim-of-invention while they are at it.

I think the point of the original post here is that Pro8 is showing no signs of even acknowledging that this is in fact a widespread idea, just as they barely acknowledge others are involved in super 8. They have an insular world-view where they can't see past their own navel. And they charge $500 for a camera conversion!! They better recentre the lens for that price. If not, it would be on par with everything else they do ($300 for a Russian windup that can be had for $25 on ebay, for example).
Maybe I can sit down now.

Calm down! Film-Thurso's amazing achievements in the field of widening the super 8 frame back in 1986 resulted in a picture that went right to the edge of the film but with a bit of black curving in up the the top and bottom corners because it wasn't a precise science- just tinkering! Not only that but the filing of the projector gate wasn't great either but the projector itself wasn't a gladiator in cinema terms either (a Cine Royal -cheap thing). This meant that the extra area gained soon began to show signs of wear where it came into contact with the guide plates.
Hey Rick, I know you changed the wording on your site but I haven't taken any head of it since I looked over a year ago. Don't be so sensative, but do remember that it is in part the choice of wording chosen for the Sleep Always site that has lead to threads like this.
Always read the label carefully (or the Film-Thurso police will get ya! )
