Hama Splicer

Post by oslobeach »

Hi

I need to invest in a good splicer at the moment, do you guys recommend the Hama one that 7dayshop sells?

I've never spliced Super 8, but I've spliced lots of 16mm with a guillotine splicer that had a blade on the side to 'cut' the film with.

How would I cut the film when it comes to super 8 using the Hama? Do I manually cut it with scissors? I can't see any blades on the splicers for S8 I'm seeing on the net, apart from the really expensive guillotine ones that I can't afford at all

Thanks for the help

Hi,

I've got one of those hama splicers. It has got an integrated razor blade in the top. For the first 20-30 slices it's a real royal pita to use as you'll have to figure out how to manually wrap the tape tightly enough around the film. But once you figured it out, it works better for me than Kodak's "Presstape"-thingie. Hence I'm very happy with my hama splicer.

BTW: the model that is still in production used to be the "simplest" one. The "better" models used to have a spring-operated mechanism that wrapped the tape around the film. On the other hand: that mechanism is extremely loud. In fact the mechanism is so loud that I couldn't use it as I mainly edit my films in the living room while my wife is already sleeping in the bedroom. So I returned the version with the mechanism to my friend (I only borrowed it from him) and kept on using my "simple" version. I'm not so sure whether the spring mechanism will last that long, too. Therefore the current "simple" version also has got some advantages. (Not to mention that it's cheaper than the versions with mechanism that used to be sold for a 2-3 times higher price in the late 80s.)

Thanks for your help.

Would you recommend the Hama over this agfa one?:

The Agfa is nice but really fancy schmancy-- it swings and flips around and is fun to use. Agfa no longer makes the tapes but they say the Hamas will work but I'm not sure about that.

If you like the 16mm Guillotine they have them in S8 too but getting pricy. Tape is cheap.

I prefer the Wurker-- like the Hama the splices are still available.

the Hama splices fits the Agfa S8S if properly inserted into the splicer and if properly operated that splicer is fab.

Hi,

I've never used the Agfa F8S. In the 80s there were several tests and the Würker nearly always ended up as best splicer. I don't remember whether Agfa or hama did have better results in those tests.
I've bought several used splicers on eBay. In most cases the razor blade was broken or edgeless. Or something else was broken. Hence I ended up buying two brand new splicers: One hama and one Kodak. And the hama splicer is the better one.

The Hama UK site doesn't list any of the products in the above link

Does anyone know where I can find the coloured leaders that Hama makes?

Thanks for all the help!

I have the Hama splicer (bought from 7dayshop) and it works fine. It is very similar to the Rowi splicer I used to have and which wore out after about 10 years use...so there were no issues learning how to make it work.

The tape splices ought to last many years if spliced correctly. That's not to say there are no better products on the market...depends how critical the issue is to you.

Hi,

a) Try Hama UK nevertheless - even when they don't list the items the should be able to order them via the "German" order-numbers.
b) Try any of the below alternatives:
http://www.blueaudiovisual.co.uk/
http://www.classichomecinema.co.uk/
http://www.derann.co.uk/
http://www.filmcamerakit.com/
http://www.fosterfilms.co.uk/
http://www.leescameras.demon.co.uk/
http://www.marriottworld.com/
http://www.widescreen-centre.co.uk/Cata ... ision.html

My advice: Test them before ordering heaps of them! My Bauer T610's auto-threading just "eats" all hama leaders (white, red, green). They seem to be too flexible to be used in this projector. They work fine in a friend's Elmo GS1200 though. Therefore I'm not sure whether this problem is caused by a flaw my projector or by a flaw in the leader's material.
(The leaders used by Kodak, Fuji, Agfa, Dwayne's and Orwo (Orwo = only white!) are always working fine in my Bauer T610. So this problem only occurs when using leaders from hama, Revue, Rowi or the red or green-Orwo-leaders.)
