Re: $20 scanning from FFP

Scan Station is just about the best you can do as long as the operator knows what he's doing. Only thing I would ask for is full 2k scans. 2048×1536 is much higher than HD with pillar box (1920x1080). That's useful if you are finishing in HD and need to do a pan & scan. I know we argue endlessly abo...

Re: Archiving

What could have made you to have film duplicates made? Probably wouldn't make duplicates. Most of the footage I'm archiving is personal stuff and the professional projects wouldn't have the budget or really even the need for film duplicates. Once the project is shot, edited and finalized it would a...

Re: Archiving

If you're storing old film possible future vinegar fumes from the film might affect the USB drive. It might be wise to wrap the drive up in something to protect it. Just a thought. Hmmmm...interesting. I'm making sure the storage cans/boxes are vented. Which is good for the vinegar issue but bad fo...

Archiving

I'm going through the process of archiving a closet full of film. I'm ordering Tuscan plastic vented cans and trying to figure out a good database system to keep track of everything. In the mean time I've found that these SanDisk USB drives fit perfectly in 16mm cores and I'll secure with a little f...

Re: The State of Double Super 8

The reality is they could sell Double Super 8 but that would eat into their profits of the Super 8 cartridges so it won't happen. The last I heard back was to wait until 16mm Ektachrome is available...then talk to them again. Honestly I don't think it's the eating into the Super 8 profit that's the...

There's no point in Super 8 anymore as one might as well use 16mm, the price difference is so close.
It's been that way for a while when getting quality scans. If you're just projecting there's still a savings with Super 8 but 16 has quite a few advantages without that much of a price jump.

Re: The State of Double Super 8

Pretty sure there would be no Super 8 without DS8 Just to be clear, any stock Kodak sells in Super 8 (Vision 3 50D, 200T, 500T, Ektachrome, Tri-X) at one stage in it's life IS DS8. That's the step right before they slit the 16mm double Super 8 perf down to load the cartridges. So the trick is to ge...

Re: Kodak Film Prices

If sold at US$22.50 (half the cost of a 100' roll of 16mm), that's a nice $11.00 profit or nearly a 100% markup. But in reality it's being sold for US29.99. That yeilds a profit of $18.50 or an obscene markup of 247%. Maintain the rage! :AR! It would seem like a crazy markup, but I'd bet the accoun...

Re: Kodak Film Prices

As can be seen the 35mm stock is almost twice the price of the 16mm stock, proving that it is the film component that is the main cost of the total price. That doesn't PROVE the film component is the main cost of the total price (although obviously it is) as the cans and plastic cores cost about th...

Re: Kodak Film Prices

...the price of Super 8 is not proportional to it's size compared to 16mm and 35mm. It is not even close. Eg. Price of 100' 16mm color neg $45. Price of 50' 8mm color neg $30. That seems to imply that the bulk of the cost is material but with film it's not at all. Plastic is crazy cheap even with o...

Re: Kodak Film Prices

No one on an ordinary wage can really afford movie film. Where I am Super 8 Ektachrome is being offered by Kodak for $66 each (due to exchange rate), minimum 5 units purchased. Now add on processing $20 plus postage and total is over $90 each. Average wage here for retail work which is what a lot o...

Re: Kodak Film Prices

And Dwayne's Photo is selling EK100D S8 for $48 per cart. Give thanks you can get E100 from Kodak for $40.00 Kodak isn't discounting even for retailers...and now they've broken one of their taboos and gotten into 16mm & 35mm processing just to keep quality processing available. Things are changing....

Re: Kodak Film Prices

There's not much to discuss...their bean counters run the numbers and determine what they need to sell it for to make a profit. No matter how much enthusiasts and hobbyists buy it will never come close to the economies of scale that film used have. Yes they made some obscene profits at the height of...

Re: New Universal pricing w/free shipping!

Actually, that is something we are working on. It would be a combination film cleaner and rewind unit. Seems like it would be useful for archives and shops that transfer film regularly. I was tempted to pick up a cleaning machine when a local lab went out of business but it was the size of a vendin...

Re: New Universal pricing w/free shipping!

Roger, have you thought about creating a film cleaning unit? Maybe you can ask your customer base if there's a market for it but I bet a simple motorized cleaning solution would help improve the scans even more.
