Quick Few Questions On Canon 310XL

Post by Brackish »

Just picked one up on ebay. No manual.
What does the yellow square in the viewfinder mean?
What does the outdoor/indoor switch do?
How does the camera know what ASA film is being used?
When I change the focus using the lens, am I suppose
to notice a focus change in the viewfinder?

Upper left corner yellow flag = Lens in Macro position.

Switches the 85 filter in/out between daylight/tungsten setting for tungsten films

It sets automatically as follows (same for 514);

Tungsten light: (built in 85 filter disabled)
Film Speed Sensitivity settings: ISO 40 - 160 - 250

40 = no levers activated (open)
160 = 1 levers activated (open)
250 = 2 levers activated (open)

Daylight: (built in 85 filter enabled)
Film Speed Sensitivity settings: ISO 25 - 100 - 160

25 = no levers activated (open)
100 = 1 levers activated (open)
160 = 2 levers activated (open)

Not so easy to see on this one. You will see it best on very close up motives. Big Dof cam - not so big zoom.

Thanks S8 Booster,

So with Tungsten film, the daylight/indoor switch is disabled?
And with Daylight film, set the switch to indoor or outdoor,
whichever you are shooting?

What suggestions would you have for shooting with 125ASA
Ektachrome Tungsten? How will the 310XL deal with this speed?

Wonder why this cam would have big DOF? (I can hardly tell
that the focus is operable.) Usually, a f/1.0 lens would yield
shallow DOF.

.
Daylight shooting With Tungsten Film (example K40) set the filter to "sun" symbol position (Black)
Applies the filter to the optical path = in position.
Tungsten shooting with Tungsten film (K40) set the filter swich to "bulb" (red) position. Disables the filter.

Special note on Daylight film and notched cartridges (none avail from Kodak for S8). These carts automatically removes the 85 filter and moves it to out/off position. The Lamp/sun switch will still operate but the filter disconnected always.

Special notice on the Vision 200T cartridge only: is/was notched for daylight only even though it is a tungsten film.

Hope this helps.

S8 Booster,
I've been trying to listen to your cam noise comparisons,
but I keep getting "unable to display the page". Should
everything be working okay still?

Should be fine. Ensure filter is out, which it should do anyway, and set the filter switch the daylight(sun) position.
