'The Secret Nuclear Bunker' New Super 8 Film

Post by chrisgavin »

I'm back on here plugging another new short cine film I've just made... I visited this Cold War era facility in Essex a couple of times and shot some BW negative Super 8 film there. Like my last couple of cine films, this was then home processed and DIY digitized...

The film can be seen here...

For anyone also interested in how this is made, there's a little more info on my blog about it here...

I realise a blotchy black and white home movie about a concrete nuclear bunker might not be everybody's 'thing', but I hope it's of interest to some folks out there.

Well done, Chris! Your utilization of the Super 8 medium and hand processing was very appropriate for the era depicted. You managed to inject an "organic" element into a nuclear era concrete bunker!

Great work. Nice job of using some simple 'home movies' to make something interesting out of the footage. I particularly like the titling work. Has a real 1960s look and feel to it.

Quite a beautiful work. The look of the film interlocks well with the subject matter. The graphics as well. They echo a russian constuctivist agitprop sensibility as much as the 50's/60's Saul Bass.

Carl, your comment is historically very interesting, I live in Norway, when I was younger in the 70s we used to listen to MW radio and tuned in to Radio Luxembourg here in Europe to get the latest and hottest hits. Radio Luxembourg was sort of independent and played the music "we" wanted - the latest.
Please also refer to Radio Caroline and Uproar Radio transmitted from a ship in the North Sea outside legal restrictions.

You may get a glimse here.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGX1caqGR1o

Anyway, tuning into these stations we passed by Radio Moscow they had nonsense transmissons in Norwegian (political propeganda) telling us how phenomenal the communism/Soviet system was over our European Democracy (Pathetic).

Well, anyway we survived the bastards and here we are,....

So cool! This would make a fantastic short to insert between longer documentaries on television.

Was the Argenti APX100 custom slit?
