[Cross] processing E100D as a negative

Post by carllooper »

Is it possible to cross process E100D as a negative - ie. leaving out the reversal step in the E6 process.

The reason I'm asking is that I'm assuming the result should be less grainy than a completed reversal result, ie. would be a better master for digital transfer. But correct me I'm wrong. Knowledge of film processing is not one of my strong points.

Actually the oposite is true: stock processed as negative is always grainer than stock processed as reversal. Indeed (for any given film technology) reversal is always finer grained than negative. The reason is that the larger grains (clumps of crystals) present a bigger target to the incoming photons of light, and so it is a higher proportion of the larger grains that develope in a negative development of the film. If the film is then bleached, re-exposed and re-developed as in the reversal process, then it is the remaining, generally smaller, silver grains that comprise the positive (reversed) image.

thanks Richard - will need to wrap my head around that

I was mistakenly supposing the reversal step might be why E100D was having a slightly higher rms than V3200T.

i haven't done that much with s8 but i love it for stills and shoot at least a couple of crossed ekta every year. the reason i love it though is because the colors are completely fucked up (is this the last forum on the net that lets me say fuck?) so i doubt it would be a good idea for general purpose shooting. and as explained above you'll get more grain too anyway.

Carl, I recently tried that with a lose end:

For a split second I thought the colour balanced, grainless version was one you reverse engineered from the Super8 ... :)

Have been theorising what is lost in the reversal process, and if it's not an increase in noise, it looks like it's a decrease in dynamic range, which makes sense.

While not exactly proof of such (since comparing two different technologies), I found from the tech specs that V200 neg was reaching twice the dynamic range of E100 rev. But of course, there could be other reasons for that.

Taking into account the noise floor, v200 was reaching about 12 bits (72 dB).

Do any labs in UK/Europe offer cross-processing? I've just had some Velvia stills back, cross processed and would love to recreate the look in Super 8.

Well, you would get a really colorful negative -- is that really what you want?

Does anyone compensate their exposure when cross processing?
