Spectra Velvia 50D discontinued?

Post by SKJ »

Does anyone know about Spectra's Velvia 50D filmstock?
The Spectra website says it's "sold out" and when I called they didn't know
when or if there would be any more.

Wittner still has Velvia 50D for sale and maybe so does
GK Film (?).

I was counting on this as my favored replacement for Kodachrome,
so I didn't stock up. Any info from anyone?

Thanks!

From what I recall (if my memory is any good these days) is that Velvia 50 was discontinued by Fuji years ago and Spectra was using leftover backstock to create the Super 8 product. How much of the remaining backstock is still available to Spectra is a good question.

I'm shooting Velvia 100 and Provia 100 in 35mm on my SLR.

Mentioned this on GK new cartridge threads too. Would be something when he finally got something working the film supply would stop due to discontinuation :(
But maybe the replacing material is as good :)
Kind regards,

Yes, the "original Velvia 50" was discontinued in 2005. But in 2006 Fuji announced a successor that's available as "FUJICHROME Velvia 50 Professional (RVP50)" since 2007 and that's still available.

I called them a while back--maybe a year or so--and they said that once they went through their batch of the original Velvia, they would be switching over to the reformulated stock. I can only assume that that's what they're working on now.

But AFAIK, Spectra's still making both V50 and their version of E100D, but they're looking to switch over to the Kodak-made E100D as soon as they sell their remaining stock. I suspect they've probably already switched over, because that stuff sells very fast. I gotta wonder if that's what made Kodak put it out themselves.

Velvia 50 is quite possibly Fuji's best selling filmstock, and it is easy to see why. It's beautiful whatever it used for, and is still hugely popular with landscape and widelife photographers the world over. I reckon any discontinuation is just down to that specific store, and not Fuji. It's certainly a pretty safe stock on Fuji's books, and is available in 135 and 120 absolutely everywhere.
