some beautiful footage

Post by simo8 »

I thought some of you might appreciate this link to a site with some really nice super8 footage and the promise of much more to come. Some folks here in the U.K. will perhaps remember a channel 4 series from many years ago called Road Dreams. It was essentially a super8 diary filmed by a chap called Elliott Bristow of his time driving around America between 1968 and 1982. You can read more on his site.

There are a couple of clips to download, big files and great quality.

Take it easy,

Simon.

Thanks for sharing.

Really nice! Wish I could do something like that, travel across a continent for years and record it all on super 8.

I browsed through this website and found a still of the filmmaker with a Nikon R10 so I guess it was shot with this camera...beautiful images!

http://www.aidan.co.uk/articleabout_ell ... mmaker.htm

I like this quote:

As we enter the era of high definition TV, the soft focus, super-saturated Kodachrome Super 8 format has become even more visually appealing. The hazy, romantic, soft-filter effect is a welcome change from harsh, phosphorescent powered video images, now with HD hyper-sharpness.

But not sure about this one:

a remarkable record of America in the 70s in the form of Super 8 video footage

Looking forward to the dvd when it's ready.

What is special with these two AVIs? They do not play. I downloaded the files but then the mediaplayer reports missing rights. Can they only be played as stream? BTW Quicktime doesn't play them either.

ADDED:

Work is in progress. There are now six trailers.

Even more progress at the website:

You don't mean Mark Bristow, do you? Somebody a few years ago asked about him-- I didn't know he compiled a TV show of all that footage he made.

http://www.omniprints.com/super8/markbristow.html

Interesting article about him in an old Super 8 Filmaker-- that's where I first heard about him. Seems he would buy film and drive around and pay for his trips by projecting his movies to local audiences. He had all kinds of multi media stuff, too.

What's great is that he documented an interesting time in America, the last pre-video age.

Didn't know he was well known-- thought he had disappeared.

Seems there are two Bristows. While first we thought he had vapourized.

One Mark and one Elliot.
One with a Volkswagen and one with some US stationwagon.

Any clous on how to get these films to play?

It will be hard to get the same impression on TV as from a four screen S8 projection. Possibly it could best be done with a very wide 16:3 letterbox digital clip (wmv etc) or using multiple screens on one PC

It opens up and plays straight in Safari on my Apple Powerbook with Quicktime 7 without having to download it first. Guess you need QT 7.

You have to see it, it looks more like 16mm than super 8 in my opinion.

The clips diden't open up on my pc aswell. I did this ( nerd style ) :

Clicked on the link image, wich brought me to the video page. Inmideatily click the browser function "stop" wich stops loading the clip. Look in the source code of the html page wich says:

Code: Select all

embed src="http://www.tradebit.com/download.php/2085992" width=600 height=496
/></center>
You go to the php page "http://www.tradebit.com/download.php/2085992" and it automaticly starts downloading a *.m4v file that you can play with VLC player.

Here are the links to the movies:

I think there are a million of these road movies waiting out there but there
is a professional touch to this film. Perhaps because he used a tripod?
The distinctive fuzz of Super 8 is there but the quality of the shots is top
notch. But boy does he need some better music!

All ready did the same (reading the source) and downloaded the files. Neither Quicktime nor Mediaplayer digest them well. So nothing there,

Now downloaded this open source player (which is what you would find using google on - VLC Player, as mentioned above).

http://www.videolan.org/

It looks a bit odd and handles much differently but it displays the clips well.

Nice looking images indeed!

Like BK suggests is appears very much like a NIKON R10 is on the tripod. Even with an original HR-3 sunhood.

Check the photograph on the aidan website of the guy on the roof of the car... You can enlarge the photo twice...

Image

The tripod looks like a Gitzo :)

Work in progress on the site. Looking forward to these discs.
I wonder if there is some making of
RetroRoadTrips - the Super 8 film diary of Elliott Bristow
This preliminary site provides information on the Super 8 road trip films of Elliott Bristow. The 'RetroRoadTrips' DVD is currently in preparation, and there will also be a feature length DVD entitled 'Codachrome - a time of road dreams'. Sample films are available to download now. Check for the latest updates in the
