super8 music video online
hello everybody!
finally our 6:30 minute video is online..
please take a look
http://www.entourage-business.de/download.html
for now WMA only, quicktime plus full resolution will follow
I used K40, tri x, an 7240VNF ektachrome onthis
It involves a lot of experimentation like shooting k40 against
sunlight (first part of the medley) or shooting 7240 with an unsynced
camera under HMI light (second part) or lighting 7240 with
car headlights only by night (4th part of the medley) or using the
superwide schneider lens III for the first time which is a bitch
to focus..
I wish I had the possibility to put more time in the color
correction, but I had premiere 5.0 only, so I just desaturated
most of the stuff...
its not supposed to be perfect and I learned a lot from this
...
the next thing is going to be trix only..i really love that stock (new emulsion)
1 or 2 K40 cartridges had slight jitter, you can see that at the end
(bridges/skyscraper landscapes)
the shot in the cellar (second part) was done running the
audio playback on the set with increased speed and shot
at 48fps and slowed down in premiere to achieve some kind
of slomo feel though the music runs at correct speed
camera used: leicina special with optivaron and cinegon
and ultrawide lens

Nice! I especially liked the look of the k40 against the sunlight. Is it hard to keep it from completely washing out? What did you do to prevent that?
We'll knock back a few, and talk about life, and what is right
I've just skipped through it (I'm at work, so can't really watch it all yet - I'll watch it all when I get home) and it's very nice - good job!
One question about the aspect ratio - did you crop to 16:9, or use an anamorphic lens??
john..

thanks!!
> I especially liked the look of the k40 against the sunlight. Is it hard to keep it from completely washing out? What did you do to prevent that?
....I tried to recreate a shot that I did in new york in 2002...I got
some beatiful footage filming on the brooklyn bridge at sunset aiming
at the sun and the skylight....really beautiful red and orange!!
but that was during the golden hour in a september day afternoon...
the shot you saw in the video was done in germany in january or february
in the am and as you saw it turned out more harsh looking with pale
sky, but as I said it was mostly experimental..
I just tried to expose the face of the actor right with a fixed exposure (no auto exposure), as you can see I added some faded masks (in german: verlaufsfilter) to taim the blown out sky in post
>One question about the aspect ratio - did you crop to 16:9, or use an anamorphic lens??
..no anamorphic lens..I just squeezed the picture a little bit in post...
first because I like the frame feel and the actors looking more "compact"
and second because I tried to compensate the overscan of most
TV sets a little..

Yes, especially K40 looked great, very, well, home-grown and private without looking too amateur, the b/w stocks coulda pretty much been shot on 16mm. Though when you sent those reels to AVP, did you ask them to not clean'em? Or would they've charged you extra for cleaning? What did your actors say about the final look and quality of it, considering it was S8?

I wanted the timelapse stuff to look dirty. the blue streak on the right
side was caused by the old heurtier (did I spell it right) projector...
the k40 in the first rapping part looks kinda dirty, because
when it came back from lausanne I was eager to see how
the "against the sun + no compendium" shots turned out
so i took a look at the footage..most of the dirt on that came from
spooling back and forth....but I have no problem with
that because I consider the other "untouched" k40 at the end of the
video being almost to clean!!!
the rest of the stuff was send directly
to avp without touching it when it came back from andec and kodak
so there was no cleaning necessary.
>What did your actors say about the final look and quality of it, considering it was S8?
...I am doing music with all these guys and we are running our
label "entourage-business" together, so they had to like it
they know the stuff that I shot previously and they
all liked the fact that stuff shot on s8 appears more abstract than DV
and a little more "arty" so that it does not look to "german"
or to "amateur" or to "schueler machen filme".
besides this is a vinyl release only and we are almost straight analog
when it comes to our studios and mixing our music, so
finishing this project with an analog medium such as s8
was a logical step

ja aber zum groessten teil 30+ und schon sooooolaaaaange " im game"

hey christian,
thanks for sharing the clip, really like it, the pictures fit very good to the sound and lyrics.
Did you use reflectors to bright up the face of the rapper in the first shot against the sun? What are your expiriences with HMI's did you use different Filmspeeds with those, any flicker problems?
thanks
Thomas

thanks....
yes, i used a hand held reflector for the shots on the roof
surprisingly i had no flicker problems using the hmi...
though i expected some...
in fact i wanted to use the flicker as an effect but
it did not show up
for that scene I wanted to achieve a slo-mo-ish
kind of effect.
the rapper performed to a sped up audio playback and i filmed
it with 48fps with my unsynced leicina...
when I matched the material with the songs original speed
playback in post it kinda looks like light slomo
though everything is lip sync..
here in germany we have a 50hz powerd system and the
hmi was a really old one....this versus a framerate of about 48fps
did not cause problem....guess it was luck

Yeah. Excellent work.romeojesus wrote:besides this is a vinyl release only and we are almost straight analog when it comes to our studios and mixing our music, so finishing this project with an analog medium such as s8 was a logical step.

Am I alone in really digging the look of the 7240 stuff? Not sure why, but I really like the feel of that footage in these segments.
I have some myself but have never figured out what I want to do with it. Inspiring.

I'm really liking the finished product, christian. Great job. I love the editing of the clouds to the scratching in the song. That blue streak down the side, although a flaw that you had no control over, still kind of adds something to the shot (maybe it's just me).
But very well done and I give it a thumbs-up.
I had some 7240 once.....before I knew anything about film speeds and cameras and filters, etc....man I fudged it up. Watching it was equivalent to dimming the lights and smearing a juicy turd throughout the projector.
christian, I have no clue what the guys are saying, however it sounds like I hear some english every now and then. Can you tell us english-speakers what the song is about? I really like rap from other countries but never have a clue what they're saying!
I have also tried that slow-mo effect (running the audio at a faster rate while recording, then slowing down in post to sync properly) It's a wicked cool effect (i only tried it with video though). I first noticed it in Coldplay's "Yellow" video like 3 years back....I noticed it in an Avril Lavigne video a while back as well, now I've seen it several times. It works the opposite way too, recording the audio slow then speeding up in post to sync....I've seen that done on a couple Busta Rhymes videos and I think on a Missy Elliott video too. Whoever did it first was a genius.
