Mine showed up on Saturday in the mail.

I'm grateful to Chris for putting together a great magazine with varied, in-depth articles; it represented a ton of work and I'm glad I could subscribe. Didn't have the graphic design sensibility of SmallFilm or course (but then, not all of us can be born German with good design in the blood), but that was part of it's charm.

It was actually printed well too, must have been expensive to produce.

Just to set the facts straight, here is a copy of the letter I sent to all subscribers along with Issue #16 mailed recently.

Dear Readers:

Sorry Issue #16 of this magazine is about 18 months behind schedule, but I feel better late than never as the saying goes.

For many of you, this may come as a pleasant surprise, or shock, as you may have given up hope of the final issue to be published at all.

This issue should complete the subscription obligation for 95% or more of my 500 subscribers. If you think this issue does not complete your subscription obligation, please inform me and I’ll see what I can do.
All advertising in this issue, as was the case is Issue #15 as well, has been a gift from me, as to the best of my knowledge, there were no paid ads taken after Issue #14.

International copies just got in the mail, through DHL, this week. All U.S. subscribers should have their copies in hand by now. One of the problems with taking two years between issues has been that some people will have moved and I will not have a new address. I have already received about a dozen copies returned because of "forwarding address expired" issues.

So... if you have not received a copy it most likely is one of two reasons:
1. Maybe you aren't due one. I quit taking subscriptions and renewals around Issue #13.
2. Quite possibly my address for you is old and I have no way of getting a new one, so you need to inform me of the new address.

Now... to set the record straight on a few other matters:
First, the magazine was really a hobby and a labor of love, as it was clear after the first year there was no money to be made here. Secondly, each issue in many ways was an improvement over the previous one (more pages, more color, more graphics and better design, more money paid to contributors who wrote the articles etc). But all of the improvements also meant more time, effort, and expense needed for each issue. In the end, without trying to sound like a bragger, I made it too good, especially considering I was a one man band in its production and concept. And third, as you can see by the letter above, as far as I know there are less than a couple dozen subscribers who paid for any issue beyond #16, and I will settle with them if they let me know what they desire as far as payment in backissues or refunds due. There are no advertisers who sent money in the past three years, so no refunds due there.

Finally, I had many conversations with Juergen from Smallformat near the end of its run, and while I feel it is not for me to divulge what was said (I'll leave that up to Juergen if he so desires), I feel it safe to say I tried in every way to offer my assistance to him and his excellent magazine. In analyzing the situation at the time, I came to the conclusion that Super 8 Today had no impact at all on the demise of Smallformat. Quite a few of my international subscribers subscribed to both, and the vast majority of the U.S. subscribers just weren't interested. Some (a matter of personal taste) thought Super 8 Today was better suited for them, and many just probably didn't want to pay for a magazine that cost 3x the price of Super 8 Today. Some of my subscribers didn't renew because they didn't have the funds. That was just the economic reality.

While Super 8 Today is now on the web at both super8today.net AND super8today.com again, my email only works for chris@super8today.net

Thanks to all who subscribed through the years and issues and to all who have patiently waited for Issue #16.

thanks for the update, Chris. And thanks for all the years of producing such a fine mag (and for letting me write for it).

Thanks Chris. It was quite a nice surprise when I received issue #16 of the magazine. Sad to see it go along with SmallFormat (I was a subscriber in both). Right now, they all share my archive space on a book shelf along with old copies of Bolex Reporter, Movie Maker, and 8mm Magazine.

What was 8mm Magazine? Where/when was it out?

'8mm Magazine' was a British magazine in the 60's and early 70's that dealt with all things 8mm including reviews of cameras, projectors, lenses, techniques for filming, wide screen, essays, etc... Everthing screams quality about this magazine including the covers. I 'discovered' it years ago on UK eBay and have been watching issues ever since snatching them one a time whenever I can.
I'll take pictures of some covers and post here under a thread titled '8mm Magazine' later this week.

EDIT:
Interesting - look at this thread that I started back in 2006 and completely forgot about (Note the guy who found a whole stack of 8mm Magazine in an antique shop)

thanks! That was an interesting thread that I missed completely when it first went around. Jim Carlisle writes about going to UCLA's YRL library for some of these mags -- hell, I work at UCLA -- I think I'll check out some of these titles at lunch....
