New Music Video, tri-x cross processed, Automatic Erasers

Post by teadub »

Click here to view my latest directorial effort, a music video for the Automatic Erasers' song - England Flies - shot entirely on Super 8. The film is Tri-X (7278) cross processed as negative, and the live performance footage was pushed 2 stops. The film was shot on location with all practical lighting, no movie lights were used.

Cameras
Eumig Nautica (24fps mod)
Canon 301XL (1.0 lens)

That's really awesome! Very impressed with the wide depth of field during the live concert. Even with an f1.0 lens, I would have never thought that Tri-X could cope in such low light. I need to check out this cross-processing blog.

teadub,

I liked it. the roughed up tri x look suits the music.

you say the live footage - which I preferred btw - was pushed. was that as simple as letting the 310 expose the tri x normally (ie 160/200 asa) and asking for it to be pushed 2 stops during cross processing?

Thanks. I would not have thought it would have done so well either. We did a test processing as reversal and the latitude just wasn't there. Also, don't forget what I edited out. I had over 3 cartridges where there still wasn't enough light.

Yes, my instructions to the lab were to push everything +2 when its the band performing. The exteriors are all cross processed, with no push. I did that to retain the grain structure throughout.

I really liked how the exterior footage worked with the music. Good stuff.

Good video, all around. You should really try some vision 3 for dark interior shots, though, as the 500 asa will give clearer (read: razor sharp) results. I've started staying away from B&W film for indoor use unless there's a sh*t ton of light. It just gets muddy in my opinion.

Not being overcritical, just sharing my experience. Hope that helps. Andy at Cinelicious said my B&W night shots were "ballsy" and I agree now. Just not very clear, and consequently not very interesting to look at. The night 500 is super cool though.

I am really looking forward to trying the new vision 500t v3. Part of the reason this video was shot on tri-x is, the film was left over from another shoot. So it was already paid for, so to speak. Also, I was given full reign to do whatever I wanted. So I got a real chance to experiment, which was great.
