revelatory films

2001: A Space Odyssey (subsequently all Kubrick's films)
Pi
Irreversible
Elephant (Alan Clarke)

(favorite films are quite a different thing, Saturday Night Fever  is probably my favorite film along with Shoot the Piano Player, Manhattan, Throne of Blood, Alphaville, Visitor Q, Hitchcocks 1960s films, Kiss Me Deadly)

1.) Touch of Evil
2.) Apocalypse Now (the original, not "redux")
3.) Taxi Driver
4.) Five Easy Pieces
5.) Rashomon

My 'serious' list
Down by Law
Apocalypse Now
Wings of Desire
The Elephant Man
À bout de souffle

Also-rans, but ultimately undeserving
Ed Wood
Ghost dog: The way of the Samurai
2001: A Space Odyssey
Unforgiven
Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia

Films that I always enjoy watching
Alien - Not sure this shouldn't be in the list above on reflection.
Withnail & I - Richard E. Grant at his bonkers best
The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly - All real men secretly want to be Clint.
El día de la bestia (Day of the Beast) - Spanish priest saves the world from the Antichrist
Henry, portrait of a serial killer - I'm a sick puppy.

Films that are rubbish, but I like them all the same.
Excalibur - For its exuberant and unashamed cheesiness.
Total Recall - Arnie's best ever movie, fantastic plot twists.
Jesus Christ, Superstar - For the amazing costumes.
Evil Dead II - For the frenetic pace.
Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence - Sentimental tosh, but I was always a Bowie fan.

ha! Great list. Brings me back.
I think we should do a separate "70's Sickness" best of .... "Bring me the head of alfredo Garcia" belongs in another time/place. I can't imagine that being made in any other decade. Same with JC Superstar. I love that movie and have seen it over 100 times since I was a kid.
