Maddin's Brand
The film has already been discussed a little bit, but here is an interesting short about the making of Brand Upon the Brain. The Maddin commentary is cool but what's really great is seeing all the Canon S8 cameras in action.

They ran a week of Brand in NYC with guest narration... would love to have seen these...

Five minutes into this "making of" short? Or five minutes into the actual film itself? :?super8man wrote:5 minutes into it and I am bored silly...this is film? I mean, do we really just watch "because its shot on super 8" and jumpy super 8 at that? That boat scene frame skipping was sad.
My apologies if I am speaking blasphemy here...
Because Maddin's use of S8 is about more than just using the guage for its own sake. I don't know, I personally found Brand very interesting, both visually and conceptually.
But still, in regards to the piece I linked to, don't you think its interesting to see all the S8 cams being employed on a feature film shoot? A little something you don't see all the time.

I've been a long time Maddin fan. Anyone who hasn't seen his version of Dracula should def. check it out.
I wanted to see Brand in NYC with the guest narrators, but tix were $40 each. That seemed excessive to me, Lou Reed or no Lou Reed. I can barely afford to breath in this city.
Maddin uses super 8 in all his film (at least I think). Although I've noticed he's done a lot more digital looking things in post lately. Could really notice it in Saddest Music, for instance. I really enjoy his more antiquated techniques like vignetting a vaseline on the lens.
I met him once in Olympia back in 1998. Totally nice down to earth guy too. Love it when that happens.
