"Pass The Cart" project, Official Thread

Post by sooper8fan »

I just thought it might be a good idea to have an official thread for the "Pass The Cart" project. Hopefully all of us can use this thread as a place to discuss what we've shot, when we've received our cart, messages to the previous or next shooter in line, and post photos of us and our cams in action. I hope this thread sticks around for a while!

Just received my cart in the mail today. I plan to shoot on the weekend.

Must say that it is a cool project - passing a cart internationally is damn cool. Maybe I'm just over excited because i received mine today.

Sooper8fan I'll be mailing you my cart today. I decided against the night light shutterless thing because I have never done this with Kodachrome and I try to exagerate the light streaks with that shooting style. I usually shoot VNF 125 or Tri-X and as it is I am looking for more light, even at 12 fps. So I don't want to take a chance on an untested stock for an "international" shoot.

Instead I am going to do a time lapse of my walk to work today. It will show what I love about Toronto: the beautiful residential streets. It's sunny today so I'll have a good f-stop for my C-8 wide lens.

Check your mail box in a few days.

Awesome! Thanks for the info Rick.

Has anybody taken any pictures of their turn?

Just to confirm once more, we're each doing 10 feet as opposed to 30 seconds, correct?

Yes. Because I changed my idea I had to switch cameras, which reset the footage counter (I had shot my opening credit), so I'll play it safe and make sure I come in a little under. Don't want to leave any body short.

I am on my way out the door and planning to shoot 1 frame per 5 seconds. My 30 minute walk will take a little longer than normal as I will stop every 5 seconds for the frame to click, so the journey will come in at less than 10 feet.

I'm out the door. Wish me luck.

I forgot to bring my digital camera when I shot. I also think I underexposed a stop :? Hopefully this can be corrected during transfer? Can't wait to see the different styles each cinematographer will use.

I basically did a mix of cityscapes with a final shot of a partially frozen waterfall (almost fell down a flight of stairs getting down there). Mine will definitely stand out as amateurish from what you guys are doing 8)

I unloaded in near darkness, placed the cart in the foil and the box, taped it, then wrapped a plastic baggy around it. Tim should receive it by the end of the week.

Sooper8man, I didn't post the roll. I preserved the originial box and foil but because I changed cameras I didn't have it with me. I'll mail it tomorrow.

The shoot was interesting. I started outside my house with my Canon 814XLS, with C-8 wide attachment, auto exposure, 85 filter, and intervalometer set to 1 frame per 5 seconds with the camera pressed tight against my stomach. I didn't want to be in motion when the frame turned over so I would take 4 or 5 steps and then stop, wait for the click, take another few steps, stop, and so on.

A few things I didn't anticipate, though I guess I should have. Have you ever walked up the street coming to a full stop every 4 or 5 steps? I must have looked like an idiot. I sure felt like one. Often I could hear a pedestrian walking up behind me and they would have no idea why I kept stopping because from behind you couldn't see that I had a camera pressed up against my stomach. Needless to say I got a few strange looks.

The next little problem occurred the first time I had to cross a street. There were no traffic lights and with my shooting rhythm I would find myself stopped in the middle of the street so I had to wait for a larger than normal gap in the traffic. Of course, a car would suddenly pull out and I found myself running across the street, in mid-shot, so a few of my frames are going to be jittery. Only when I could cross with a traffic light in my favour could I stick to my plan.

On quiet streets I could hear the click, and move on. Once I was on a busy street I couldn't hear the click, but luckily I could feel it, through the camera body, barely, so there are a few frames where I was not sure whether I had advanced or not when I decided to move on.

Came in at exactly 10 feet.

What a hoot. Thanks Mojohey.

On to you sooper8fan. (I am going to unload the film in darkness, put in the original foil, and box, and a black plastic camera bag so if you load in the dark it could be seamless. My last frame was in a dark short tunnel ending with a gothic arch looking out to a bright daylit courtyard.)

Ha! I can picture it. Funny stuff. So, did you fade down to black, or not? I will load in the darkness. I assume you have my mailing address? How will I know where to send it when I'm done with it?

You're all remembering to shoot a few frames with your info, right?

I didn't fade out, but will unload in total darkness. I have your mailing address. Mojohey will supply the next address to you (pm him). There is some paperwork he sent which will be included in the package (a place for each of us to put notes). Our roll goes to Audadvn after you.

I shot a few seconds of a sheet of paper at the top saying "Toronto, Ontario, February 7, 2006, by Rick Palidwor".

I think T-Shirts would be awesome....lastcoyote, I like your idea. Anybody have any feedback, improvements, additional ideas? I remember there was talk about making T-shirts for something else once upon a time......
I understand this might not be something everybody would be into...but then again, I could be wrong.

I'd buy one of these if someone made them. It's an easy image to get printed--just black and grey, right? Or better yet, do it white and grey on black shirts. 8)
