E100D in Double 8mm is back!

Post by BAC »

It’s a lot more expensive than it used to be but it’s back. I missed out on it last time they had some but got a few rolls this time.

I like the colors of E 100D but I have to say that the contrast is ATROCIOUS! It is worse than 1940's Kodachrome!

I would not say that. I think that 50D is a very nice stock. But you have to go the extra step of having it scanned before you can view it. I know some of the larger formats have viewers that allow you to look at the negative as a positive. I wonder if there is such a thing for Super 8mm?

There are many telecine devices that can do this - including the ones produced by the Chinese company „Winait“ that get sold as Wolverine/reflecta/Somikon/… . But when doing this in „real time“, then many of them assume a certain generic negative film stock = will still have a certain color cast.

Also your smartphone‘s camera can most likely invert the image in „real time“. But when it comes to also compensate the negative film‘s orange/brownish filmbase, then there’s usually a delay and the motion will get „jerky“ (as the calculation takes so long that several images get skipped).
This space was left intenionally blank.

The other thing is that E100D is about 70 dollars for a 25 ft. roll of regular 8mm. It is about 50 dollars in Super 8mm. If they could just bring the price down to the same as the other Super 8mm stocks, it would be more affordable for most people.

I love 8mm and super 8....but I cannot stomach the price to shoot it again. I think that is true for most former film-makers. I remember about a guy who gave up shooting a project in Super 8 when he found a Vintage Super 8 ap for his smart phone...the resulting video look just like his super 8 transfers.

Using a Super 8mm ap is like putting lipstick on a pig. You can still tell that it is a pig!
