That is brilliant.

I love the way it evolves. From that which invokes the silent cinema, within a workers milieu (a shipping port) in which people misbehave for the camera without inhibition, to that which will impose a certain kind of order on such, of stiff poses and proper manners, of pomp and ceremony. The rich arrive, and colour to accomodate their entitled position in the world. The film will create this world for them to inhabit, in the same way that the workers in the boiler room, and in the kitchen, slave away to facilitate it. The dining room becomes this created world.

And when the seagull breaks into the dining room there is temporarily a spell broken, with a brief moment of sync sound (I am sure). A terror amongst the diners. When order is restored the Blue Danube soothes their nerves, and becomes the soundtrack for the blind woman.

Every shot interleaves with every other shot, shifting the work between different realities, without it ever being possible to say exactly when it happens. It just permeates the very fabric of the work.
