Post by steve hyde »

Super8ers,

I'm posting to share with you the news that our small gauge film Shikashika won the jury prize for "Best Film" at the 2nd International Cambridge Super 8 Film Festival last week.

The prize includes 20 rolls of color negative stock, processing and telecine at the legendary Todd-AO post house:

I know the directors are already at work planning for the third annual festival so keep them in mind when your films are ready.

If you are interested to learn more about how we made Shikashika, feel free to inquire in this thread.

Alright then! Which festivals did you submit your film to in Holland? Would be really cool to see it at a film festival here!

Excellent news and I am more than sure it is a fully deserving winner.... although wasn't half of it shot on 16mm?!!

The Cambridge festival is fast establishing itself as the place for highbrow super-8 work with Dan's film winning last year and now your film taking the cap this time round.

Thanks.

Indeed, many shots were made with a Bell and Howell Filmo DR. Most of Shikashika was shot on Super 8, which is interesting because I actually shot more 16mm stock and then ended up favoring the super 8 footage in the editing.

Great news Steve.

Is this the piece you asked me about helping with the editing? Wish I was involved so I could share some of the success:)

Rick,

Thanks for that offer. I ended up getting some help locally. Would have been fun to work with you. Hopefully we can combine efforts on a project sometime.

Deserved wins!

The middle section with the ice cutting to the rhythm of the score at that point is pure poetry - could watch that bit over and over!

Steve
You're on a roll. Did you send it to Hot Docs? It just wrapped here in Toronto and if you didn't try, send it in for next year. There is a huge industry presence (if that matters). There is also something called (I think) the Banff Mountain Film Festival in Banff Alberta.

Rick,

I did submit to Hot Docs and they billed me 115.00 late submission fee. I called them and said - no can do. They probably dropped the film from consideration.
Probably a mistake on my behalf since if it was selected they probably would have paid my airfare and hotel stay like many of the bigger festivals do. (even for shorts as I'm sure you are aware.)
