mentos+diet coke: hilarious
I know this is probably old news to most of you but I've been so busy I just saw this. Apparently if you put a butt-load of mentos into a 2 liter bottle of diet coke, you get a huuuuge reaction, like, immediately. Here is one of probably hundreds of videos showing the reaction:

I saw another link where a guy slammed a bottle down on the pavement and it shot off in the air like a rocket, clean over his house.
I am really fascinated by this. I can imagine why there would be a reaction but it is so violent and fast. Is there a chemist in the house?
Wouldn't this be a great cheap special effect for a Super 8 film?
Roger

Euh, like shooting from a vantage point and track the launced bottles or more like the rocket camera idea of Nigel. I.e. strap a (somebody else's) camera to a bottle and see what comes of these images when it is running when it is launched.

As you may know I work in the science department of a London school...a few days before this phenomenon was spread across the London newspapers a teacher picked it up on an internet forum and we tried it...works really well...
There's a spoof video somewhere on YouTube of a girl eating mints, drinking pepsi, dancing around and exploding.....

The government says that by 2010 30% of us will be fat....I am merely a trendsetter

The sugar in the Mentos lowers the surface tension, and it has a rough surface at the molecular level - this provides many nucleation sites for the CO2 to come out of solution as bubbles. The surface tension is lowered, so the bubbles are able to migrate into the atmosphere.I am really fascinated by this. I can imagine why there would be a reaction but it is so violent and fast. I don't know why Diet Coke works better than other sodas. I hate the stuff and will never purchase it or consume it, so I can't be the one to ingest both simultaneously ;)
