Re: best c-mount lenses
there's no limiting factor, no bottleneck, the effects add up. a sharper lens will always produce a sharper image, even on vhs. the lower the res the less it matters, but it's always there, and with film where emulsion and lens are very similar in resolving power, at around 100 l/mm, both have a hug...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?
This is not quite true. The grain of film is not a variation in density as much as a variation in the distribution of otherwise very small particles. ...which on digital registers as a varying density. let's say a single black grain is the size of half a pixel. if it happens to register smack in th...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?
yes, you're right. but very few lenses used on super 8 resolve 200 lines, i'd say it's closer to 50 most of the time, and lens transfer functions are just as fixed as pixels, a photon that hits the lens in the same certain spot will for all practical purposes hit the emulsion in the exact same spot....

Re: In My Image --> HD remaster?
Yeah Id' say you're right on the first 2 points there Matt - but in the last one what I mean is subsampling 4:4:4 not 4:2:2 or whatever miniDV is. 4:2:0 as kent says, but either way that won't help you the slightest bit. 4:4:4 looks better but it doesn't give you any more color to work with. it's j...

Re: In My Image --> HD remaster?
mostly good reasons, except: - I want it to stand up to projection so need the extra res pal resolution works fine for projection, even at theatrical sizes. many mainstream movies have done it even. - I want more resolution for the image stabilisation sotware to work with why? if an algorithm has a ...

Re: best c-mount lenses
yeah i have access to any camera possible, it's called renting. :-) a major part of the cost is the glass so it could indeed be a good investment. most cameras i rent have pl mounts, but there's no way i could afford those lenses. the c-mount seems to be coming back though, in the cameras i mentione...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?
ok, so i'm later than late, but while this is a *very* nice looking clip i think it only proves that the spirit is a wonderful machine, and actually rather suggests that hd isn't worth it. i took the hd clip (compressed from vimeo but it doesn't matter much for sharpness), downconverted it to pal, t...

Re: best c-mount lenses
- what subject matter? - what kind of look are you going for -- I like your quote I don't shoot Super 8 because it looks good - I shoot it because it looks bad! - I take it you're definitely aiming for a 35mm blow up? - and what stock are thinking of shooting on? it's a coming of age comedy. i thin...

Re: Heydays of film
just a reflection: in my small home town in the 80's there were three camera shops, now there are zero. of course there are hifi, hardware, cellphone, computer, convenient and grocery stores that sell cameras, so it's bigger in the mainstream, but as a hobby/enthusiast thing photography is dead. it'...

Re: best c-mount lenses
thanks a lot. i might get the 5.9 but i have to keep looking since the current prices on ebay are a little over my budget. i've narrowed it down to the few 10mm lenses that seem to be readily available, which one is better? zeiss 2 switar 1.6 angenieux 1.8 (som bertiot 1.9) (schneider 1.8) i've pret...

Re: In My Image --> HD remaster?
yeah but nothing says you can't get great results with dv. there's really nothing wrong with it and even its reputation for falling apart in grading isn't always true. if you can't get fantastic results from your original dv tapes chances are an hd transfer won't help much either. will it make fanta...

Re: In My Image --> HD remaster?
but do you really think a new transfer is necessary? put a clip on your ftp and I'll tell you if it will work. i run a small grading business now, so i got all the calibrated monitors and stuff, and after three features and numerous shorts the experience too.
