Re: Flatwood (Tabby Crabb) Passing?
Sad news. Makes me think about the huge amounts of workload and manhours I put onto my shoulders... I think I will hire more staff and try to take more time off. Thanks for the heads up mr. Flatwood.

Re: Lighting for Super 8 weddings
I´d say shoot with 500T when shooting lowlight. If you want to mix it with Tri-X, just desaturate it in post.
/EDIT: Ah, grainy just beat me my 500T suggestion with a few seconds...

Ah, wonderful story! I didn´t know it was that precious footage I had received (although all family footage is precious, this must be over the regular level of "preciousness").

Re: Unusually short lifespan for a recordable DVD
If you have the option, never use RW discs, always use R discs.
If it is a RW-disc, then they might have accidentally erased the disc because it it a Re-Writeable disc.

Was it a R-disc or a RW-disc?
Have they tried to access the disc on a few other computers?

Re: Unusually short lifespan for a recordable DVD
I´ve been making DVDs since 2002 I believe. Back then it was a question of having either + or -, I remember a Sony was my first multi-format DVD-burner. Oh, it was a luxury to be able to burn both formats with one drive! 8)

Re: Unusually short lifespan for a recordable DVD
Alright, a history lesson! From the beginning when recordable DVDs was all new and cool a few companies made the DVD-R discs and DVD-R burners. This was their design, their patented stuff and they wanted this to become industry standard. Then a few other companies made the DVD+R discs and DVD+R burn...

Re: Unusually short lifespan for a recordable DVD
There is also the chance that it is a DVD+R disc and their DVD-drive can only read DVD-R discs. Or the other way around. As others have suggested, they should try to read it on a few different computers.

Re: Can quality transfers be done from 16 or 18 frames per s
Sure, the bonus-footage or another film on the DVD/Blu-ray can be with a different framerate, or at least I am quite sure that is should work just fine.
But you cannot have different scenes on one film with different framerates.

Re: Can quality transfers be done from 16 or 18 frames per s
60p also exist right? Yes, in the US as a Blu-ray framerate for 1280x720, and 50p exists in europe as a Blu-ray framerate for 1280x720. These framerates are much better for smooth motion, so if you go for a HD-transfer get it transferred to 60p in 720p if you are in the US, or to 50p 720p if you ar...

Re: Can quality transfers be done from 16 or 18 frames per s
No, it isn´t. It has to do with standardized framerates and such, for material shot film 16 or 18 fps you need pulldown, either by repeating frames (sharper results), by mixing interlace-fields (not as sharp, but preferred by some for a bit smoother motion) or by creating new frames that are supp...

Re: Digitally Preserving Old, Damaged Film and Sound
Yes... how many perforations are totally lost in a row? If you get it transferred with a FlashscanHD, the laser-stabilised image can help with serious perforation damage. It can even transfer film that has no perforations left by calculating where the perforations should be. I believe it was up to a...
