Thanks, Andreas. Jeff Kreines referred me to Dino Everett, archivist at USC Hugh M. Hefner Moving Image Archive. I spoke to Dino about it in person at Home Movie Day at USC in October.

Kinetta Archival Scanner in Los Angeles?

Does anyone know whether there is a service in the Los Angeles area using the Kinetta Archival Scanner on regular 8mm film? Does Colorlab have a branch in Los Angeles with such a scanner? I know there is a Kinetta Archival Scanner at USC, but I don't know whether I can bring them a "job", ...

Re: Pro8mm New 5K Scanner

4k TVs have been out in the wild for a few years now. 8k is on the horizon. Better yet, Rec. 2020 is on the horizon, a new television standard not only for higher display resolution, but also high dynamic range and a wider color gamut. Most of us must be digitally remastering our films in the Rec. ...

Re: 1950's regular-8 filmstock questions.

I am the person quoted in VideoFred's original post at the top of this thread. I found a bunch of little instruction pamphlets with the regular 8mm film camera that I used when I was a kid. Here's both sides of instructions for the aforementioned Sears film. I take it the Sears film is 3M's Dynachro...

Re: New Film Scanner with "Universal Optics"?

Thanks, Andreas. Both products (the Golden Eye 4 film scanner and the Xena Film Scanner & Datacine) look exciting.

I hope there will be services offering scanning of regular 8mm film, with one or both of these film scanners.

New Film Scanner with "Universal Optics"?

I like paying attention to new technology for scanning small gauge film, like other people on this forum. Digital Vision's Patrick Morgan says the new Golden Eye 4 film scanner consists of "universal optics" that will allow scanning of any format, including 8mm, at around 4:50 minutes into...

Ah, I see. You mean capturing a desired film look. At first, I thought you were referring to an artifact on HDTV's.

Nice idea though. 16 fps film looks great. I love the motion blur at that rate.
I'm not sure whether you're being facetious. I think the WD TV Live Streaming Media Player and Samsung HDTV do a superb job with it.

No motion blur to speak of.

Re: Attempting 16fps Video From Regular 8mm Films

P.S. Turns out, my MSI Wind netbook, with an Atom processor, has trouble playing any 1080p video, regardless of whether the frame rate is 15fps, 16fps, 23.976fps, or 29.97fps. So 16fps was not the culprit.

Re: Attempting 16fps Video From Regular 8mm Films

Yes, I did get a frame-by-frame transfer, which plays at the wrong speed. That was intentional, in order to get a frame for frame transfer. Once converted to DPX, frames per second is moot. And the point of creating true 16fps video is to avoid creating extra frames, in order for it to play at the c...

Attempting 16fps Video From Regular 8mm Films

I have read several forums where post production professionals warn that video with a non-standard frame rate (such as 16fps) is not possible. A few months ago, I used a service to transfer silent regular 8mm films to high definition on the MMII, using an AJA card, and encoding to 444 RBG 10-bit unc...
