We just upgraded a Retroscan Universal with a Blackfly S 4k camera and are really pleased. Sensors keep getting better and better.

Re: Vinegar syndrome 16mm transfer

I have yet to run across a slimey one! I really dislike working with vinegar syndrome film. I digitized a film last year that was more warped than brittle. The final product is pretty rough. Unfortunately I wasn't able to transfer the audio, but for a warped as heck, clear edged 16mm film I thought ...

Re: RetroScan Universal Operating Question

I use Flycapture2 for various reasons. The Retroscan software (at the time) didn't provide functionality that I wanted so I wrote some of my own software to process the individual frames. However, it sounds like Retroscan is evolving and I may have to re-visit it eventually.

Re: RetroScan Universal Operating Question

My apologies. I recall there used to be a stabilization feature in an older version but I'm not familiar with the latest version of the retroscan software. I use a modified version of the FlyCapture2 software with my Retro these days.

Re: RetroScan Universal Operating Question

Are you using the stabilization feature of the RetroScan software? Try turning that off if you are having trouble with random jumpy frames.

Re: Craig Rewind is stiff

Sounds like it needs a good cleaning and re-greasing.

Take it apart, clean it thoroughly and apply some new grease. White lithium grease works well.

Awesome work! I wish I had the time and knowledge to tinker with my Universal like you do. Luckily we have you to do the hard work :-)

Re: MovieStuff Universal Scanner Review

I just upgraded to the Universal after owning both the 16 and 8 pro models during the sale. I'm happy that I did. There are only a couple of things that I need to do differently in my workflow. For example, I find it's necessary to append a temporary leader tail to the film so the final frames get c...

Re: Homemade Wet-gate for my Retro-8

Yes, applied to both sides. The film has been played through a projector, but doesn't play well because of damaged perforation holes. It will jump, stop, jam. Very risky. It's even a wonder it's able to be captured/digitized and viewed today.

Re: Homemade Wet-gate for my Retro-8

Haha thanks! No, I can't take any credit for the film. It was shot by my partner's brother (Stan Fure) for a high school project. They played it for the class along with "Bad to the Bone" as the soundtrack. My goal was to see what FilmGuard could do. I knew that film was pretty scratched f...

Re: Homemade Wet-gate for my Retro-8

Yup, it's not perfect. I haven't been able to get a film-o-clean, those seem to be more rare than a unicorn. Here's a before and after example: Before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-b9FpDt5p0o After: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgzOFDrqygw The after is obviously better, but you can see some w...
