Re: Kodak Film Prices

Lower costs have always been the advantage of S8 and should still be. This post reminds me of when you could buy 100ft rolls of DS8 for $40 and process for the same cost as a 100ft roll of 16mm which was about $12 plus a $3 slitting fee. So $55 for 200ft of S8 processed. That was 2006. But soon afte...

Re: Any tutorial on how to capture color negative with RetroScan-HD Universal?

I'm using 2K camera and Ultralite source. If moviestuff can do a tutorial, it would be nice, even if it's just a pdf. I'll try out DaVinci Resolve, I have a GTX 1080. Roger Made some good points. If you’re using the 2K setup and your images are still milky, the problem would most likely be how the ...

Re: New Universal 2K upgrade review

Maybe talking about AEO Light? It’s a free app that can convert a scanned optical track to a wave file. Ive used it a few times with 16mm prints and it’s pretty amazing how well it sounds and syncs up the whole way. Roger: now that you’ve conquered the DIY digital realm, any plans to do something in...

Re: Any tutorial on how to capture color negative with RetroScan-HD Universal?

Are you using the standard HD or 2K? The new light source on the 2K is much better for bringing in density. With the HD unit, you are a little more dependent on post grade for density. If you have a decent graphics card, the free version of DaVinci Resolve is very effective. Start with gain, gamma, ...

Re: 500T in Adelaide city street at night

"I wish they would come out with 400T Ektachrome" I suppose too much grain is never enough! It would be a generation ahead of V3 500T, which looks pretty good with a clean scan. Reversal also is, or appears finer grain than color negative. So I would expect that a new 400T reversal could ...

Re: 500T in Adelaide city street at night

Pretty decent for the 1014E. Good camera but not ideal in low light. I'm guessing you're a fan of the XL cameras? A number of years ago, I filmed some performers in an outdoor stadium at night under artificial lighting with the Canon 1014E and Kodachrome 40. And the results turned out surprisingly ...

Re: Customer review: Universal 2K

I've got a 1 min demo ready, just waiting for the score from a musician. It does not compare old vs new, it's just an example of S8mm and S16mm. Hope to have it online by next week.

If the $25 price is still listed at their online store, that's what you pay. I ordered up 20 rolls at the old price and they shipped.

Ouch, and the site has gone pretty silent on S8. It's not mentioned in the consumer section any more, no hype about the camera.

Re: Customer review: Universal 2K

I'm reviewing a scan I just did, from a 200ft reel of home movies ive scanned before with the 1080 camera and old light source. It came out good before, but with the 2K cam and new LED it's just amazing. One big improvement I'm seeing is far less grain. A lot of it has to do with hardly any digital ...

Re: Customer review: Universal 2K

Got my 2K upgrade finally up and running this week. So many improvements, so many options. A wide variety of resolutions, aspect ratios, compression levels, and file formats to name a few. With the new light source, no need to max out the gain for negative film, which leaves you the whole spectrum t...
