Re: NAB 2017 - any film/cine news?
On a further practical front, if 4K is acceptable for 35mm, then 4K for 8mm is definitely overkill and even for 16mm rather questionable. So whilst in the past, having a lower resolution camera for 35mm (maybe 2K) because that was all that was practically available, cropping for 16mm would have bee...

Re: Frame rate capture transfer question
If you have access to a flatbed scanner with a transparency adapter like an Epson V850 you could scan maybe to frames at a time then manually align them all in Photoshop. I've done this with 35mm lomokino films; although that was only 64 frames or so. Not quite as time-consuming as it may sound if y...

Thanks. Waiting on the colorist's availability to get it finished up. When you have limited funds you have to be able to be patient.Andreas Wideroe wrote: ↑Tue May 02, 2017 9:18 pmI dig the stills here! Spacesuite in Dallas. Looks great. Post a link to the video when it's finished please! It's great inspiration to others.

Re: Kodak Super8 revival - Media coverage
I know the film lab in Atlanta they're talking about and I'm glad they bought it. Good guys working there, dependable professionals. They were charging the same for 16mm & 35mm processing which I thought was a little strange however.

Re: A talk on film for new film users
Great advice, thanks. Kodak's presentation will be good but geared more towards industry people. New filmmakers and small guys may be either overwhelmed or simply confused so my goal is to come in and humanize it for someone who wants to make a short film or shoot a wedding with film. Try to simplif...

A talk on film for new film users
I'm giving a talk in a few weeks with Kodak in Shreveport, Louisiana, USA to new filmmakers that have no experience with film but want to learn. I'll be assembling an Arri SR2 and letting them shoot a little. Hope it won't scare them away. I'll also show off some inexpensive 16mm and Super 8 cameras...

Re: NAB 2017 - any film/cine news?
Too bad they don't have a zoom/movable camera/lens so you could get the same nice resolution for smaller formats. Only 35mm at full resolution. This is one of those basic design flaws that I just can't understand. If you work exclusively in 35mm, which perhaps some shops in LA do, fine...but there ...

Re: What have you been working on lately?
Been working on an interesting music video. I took a bunch of 16mm and 35mm stock that's been sitting in my fridge for years and shot a man walking around Dallas in a space suit. The song is a mellow tune about isolation in a relationship. With very little planning other than locations and limited t...

I'm hearing that it does a fine job on new or well-maintained film but for archivists the Lasergraphics workstations are amazing. I will say that Blackmagic makes the sexiest film scanner I've seen though.Stopped at BlackMagic booth and got a good look at the 35mm Cintel scanner

Re: Interested in a new RetroScan Universal?
On a related topic, we hope to have a 2K upgrade kit available by the summer. It is a separate kit that the user installs easily without having to send the whole unit back and will work with the Universal software, which is currently undergoing a complete revision. Will that be a full 2k 2048x1440i...

Re: Interested in a new RetroScan Universal?
We have a local shop here in Dallas that bought a RetroScan Universal and it really improved their quality...plus now they offer 16mm which they couldn't do before. And the shop owners are almost giddy over their new toy and the improvement it has made. Most people that take in their old movies to b...

Two music videos shot so far this year on 16mm. Use it a little less for home movies recently but will probably start pumping that up more.

Re: 16mm Workshops
I did a workshop in Little Rock, Arkansas with Kodak on 16mm (and Super 8) for the film society there. You really have to start from ground zero to explain the whole process and what's involved. We had some blank stares at certain points and had to get really basic. I found this print many years ago...

Re: Any way to do sync sound?
Zoom makes a great little audio recorder that happens to have a video camera attached. This is actually a great solution. You can have a visual reference to match the audio which is extremely useful for film work. https://www.zoom.co.jp/sites/default/files/styles/png_to_jpg/public/products/hero-imag...
