Re: The return of Ektachrome - CES 2017

I suppose it would be possible to reverse colour negative film, but perhaps that would result in negative colours on a positive image. It is! I did it with Mono No Aware in Brooklyn last year. https://vimeo.com/163746494 It's Vision3 500T shot at 160 then processed in E6 chems with some adjusted ti...

Re: Who's Left Shooting 16mm?

Dang wish I saw that free camera from you earlier, John! I figured you were asking for offers. I've been dying to try 16mm but can't justify the expense right now vs my Super 8 investments. Guess I'll go for a K3 down the road. Seems easy enough. If everyone drops out, I'm in! Need to order some fil...

Re: Retro Scan Universal experiments using the gh4 in 4k

Ya I think the GH4 footage looks more realistic in regards to what's on the film. The Retro, while a solid machine that produces great results, is oversharpening the image in my opinion vs the 4k capture is seeing more of the original film grain and is a bit softer without any post processing obviou...

Re: Uncompressed Workflow Retro-Universal

I think the uncompressed looks great! I think it's sharper than your previous scan of this you posted on your vimeo. Not sure what all the differences were in your scan/CC methods for that one. For instance, just that main canoe shot looks a lot sharper. I feel like the Retro scans well but that the...

Re: Conversion negative in positive

So if you have a scan of negative film, as said before, you can select invert in Premiere. This will give you a blue-ish video. Now for a relatively quick fix, select "fast color corrector" in the effects panel, then in the Effect Controls window, about halfway down that effect, there's a ...

Re: Film Workshops

That's great Pav! I'm in NYC and have done a few workshops with MONO NO AWARE here and really enjoyed them. He does 16mm and Super 8 workshops. You could try and connect with Steve Cossman who runs it and get some thoughts/advice/etc. haha. But good on you for keeping film alive. These workshops pea...

Re: Which film for canon 518?

I'd probably recommend Kodak Vision3 200T (Super 8) instead of the 500T you linked. The 518 won't meter the 500T correctly. Plus the 200T is a fantastic film for mixed lighting. Just throw the filter to sun for outside and to bulb when indoors and you should be just fine. You could also use 50D if y...

Re: Super 8 processing in NYC?

Hey fellow NYC Super 8 buddy. The short answer is no. The last place was PacLab and they've closed down years ago. The slightly longer answer is that Metropolis Post NY will do it for $25/roll but they send it off (presumably to CineLab in MA). So you might as well just send your rolls to CineLab yo...

Re: Bell & Howell 2146 XL viewfinder repair

Sorry this post took a couple weeks to get approved so I got bold and fixed it in the meantime. Basically, I found a few hidden screws under some fake leather stickers near the lens as well as one under the panel where the cartridge sits that managed to let the side detach. Found the mirror bouncing...

Here's your update! They are now certified as a manufacturer. New timeline to follow once they can nail it down.

Bell & Howell 2146 XL viewfinder repair

Hey there. Anyone have any experience with this or similar Super 8 cameras? I got it off eBay for cheap and it works great EXCEPT that I believe the mirror that reflects the prism light into the viewfinder came loose in shipping and is tumbling around in the camera. I cannot figure out how to open t...
