Re: When Super 8 and hipster mashups collide.

It terrifies me that the bearded dudes have already hit 2/3 of their funding goal for this goofy art school project. On the other hand, maybe there's more money to be made by releasing a Super 16 knock-off of this in a larger and much more expensive version with a better lens mount. Bigger means bet...

Re: Need advice:Finally can have any camera I want! WHICH ON

Follow your first instinct and go for the Canon 814 XL-S. Either that or a Canon T4i <ducks> :)

Re: 8mm movies on iPhone !!!!!!!!!

The trouble with these apps is that they add every single defect known to man to the video in an attempt to make it look authentic. The result is shaky footage with weird mis-registration, inexplicable endless scratches, blurring and color fading that makes it look like film that has been stored in ...

Re: New Danish Super 8 camera to debut in 2014

this project is awesome. BUT you have to pull out the film from cartridge and load it on the pressure plate, so it is not so quickly as to change a cartridge on a classic S8 camera . Now immagine to shoot a documentary or whatsoever where you have to replace rapidly a cartridge every 2,5 minutes......

Re: Kodak Alaris

It concerns me that the company didn't hire a design studio for the logotype. There's a jarring disconnect between the letter A in Kodak and Alaris. That said, the new Kodak logotype is a mess anyway. The A looks like a backwards Russian B (Kodбk) and I find it hard to read without the sense that...

Re: Spiderman: Bye digital hello film

I don't like the way that my local multiplex pushes me to the 3D versions. I can watch the 3D release at four different times in the evening or see the standard version at 4pm. There are very few films should be experienced in 3D, and I view the conversion process as a shameless cash grab. What's in...

Re: Schmalfilm snuffs it

I received the final issue in the mail yesterday. It was a sad moment and an acknowledgement that times have changed dramatically. Perhaps the most telling thing: Schmalfilm, Andec and Kodak offered a Super 8 starter kit a couple of years ago for 19,90 €, including a 100D cart, processing, sca...

Re: Spiderman: Bye digital hello film

The most annoying thing here is that they're generating the 3D version in post production. They then charge $5€ more to see a dim CG modified 3D version.

Americans don't swim naked. That sort of behaviour turns people into communists and makes a mockery of freedom.

Re: Thoughts on Modern Cameras

What do you mean when you say "something better than film"? Better in what way? "Easier"? Cheaper? Even MORE "film-like"(?!)? Of course, many different "absolutely fantastic" things are sure to be conceived, developed, and manufactured in the future. But if y...

Re: Thoughts on Modern Cameras

At the end of the day, Canon and Nikon don't exist to advance art or to achieve technical perfection. They exist to make bucket loads of money for their shareholders. That means aggressive pricing and artificial product differentiation ("forgetting" audio jacks on low end DSLRs, restrictin...

Re: Thoughts on Modern Cameras

how can I replace film with video when video is moving backwards? Video isn't moving backwards at all. It's just that people expect products to be released at ever-cheaper prices, and it's impossible to provide perfection in a $299 camcorder that's destined for Walmart. A lot of R&D money goes ...

So if something better than film comes along in a few years -- something absolutely fantastic -- you'll continue to shoot film? That's romantic, but doesn't really make sense.

Re: Thoughts on Modern Cameras

Design engineers are extremely aware of the need to develop affordable CMOS sensors with global shutters and extended dynamic range. The limiting factor is Moore's Law. A typical modern CMOS array requires a photodiode and three transistors per pixel, read column by column (hence the rolling curtain...
