Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

And what method is the correct one then... Just kidding! 8)

Your method is the correct method for you, of course. [handhake]

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

Why would I want to do a "real" SD scan when I can get a much better SD scan from the HD? Quite simply because you can never get a real life SD scan from a HD transfer, what you get is a downscaled HD transfer. Wich, in essence, is not the same as a SD transfer, because you already explai...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

Your theory is that because my method is not the same as your method it must therefore be wrong. No. Your method is flawed because your intention was to compare a SD transfer to a HD transfer, but you took the shortcut and skipped getting a true SD transfer to have as a base for your comparison. So...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

Wow. If you put the same time and effort into making a real SD scan, like you do into writing marathon posts that are unreadable on a internetforum, you would actually have a real test in your hands. :)

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

No, because the result is always SD irregardless of the definition of the source . If all you are comparing is scaling of images back and forth then fine. It has nothing to do with neither a SD transfer nor a HD transfer. You can play with still images all you want. But if you are going to compare ...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

Well then, I must be getting real life results because I use the exact same real life scalers as used in all real life digital capture and digital display devices, from the cheapest scalers to the most expensive. Theproblemis that your source material is not a true SD transfer that is upscaled to H...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

1. My argument is that Super8 contains sufficient additional information to warrant an HD transfer over SD, and that this can be demonstrated by appropriate analysis of a single HD scan. We all agree that super8 hold more information than can be captured with a SD transfer. But you are the only one...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

Certainly if the HD looks better (appears better, seems better) one need not therefore conclude it actually is better. One could maintain the idea that it was just an illusion, that in reality, it was no better. This is almost like a joke... Or are you trying to play the role of a forumtroll, for r...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

The question wasn't,"Is HD Super 8 transfer down-converted to SD better than an SD transfer?" Yes, I know. Indeed that is my point as well. The 1000 dollar question is then... why are you throwing a downconverted version into the mix? ... if Kent keeps saying this, without knowing why he ...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

What I'm looking at is that even with the best possible SD transfer... In my opinion you should get the best possible SD transfer, and compare with that. If what you want to compare is the best possible SD transfer. So what exactly is the point in looking at real life SD transfers. The point is to ...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

Real life SD transfers will always be worse... Yes, and this is why your comparison of the downscaled version with an actual SD transfer is incorrect. Once again Kent ignores everything else being said. The problem is you say way too much. I don´t have time to neither read every word nor to answ...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

The down-rezzed HD acts as an image of that point beyond which an SD scan can't get any better. That is why using a down-rezzed HD as a reference is a good reference. No. You are quite simply totally wrong, and you don´t seem to understand it. The downscaled HD-transfer will give you something a...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

Sorry, I have no idea (I only use professional gear). Try if it works and report how it goes. :)

But it has nothing to do with the topic in this thread, so perhaps you would have been better off to create a new thread about it?

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

Old thread revival! So Kent is quite okay about spending his own time (if not money) on doing/comparing an SD and an HD scan. Yes I compared a SD transfer to a HD transfer. You have not done this, and that is what makes your test flawed. You compared a HD transfer resized to different resoutions. It...

Thanks guys for the recommendations! :D If these films are more like "professional or semipro" footage, instead of old familyfilms, contact me for a link to a special offer we have for all newly developed 8mm films. Well lightbreeze seem to charge the same amount for a reversal scene-by-sc...
