It's a toy - as such it has no 'practical application' other than to be a bit of fun. I wonder how easily it could be converted to Xenon?

Gakken's Otona No Kagaku 'advanced science kits for adults' are great. I particularly like their little battery powered tube amplifier and their reissue of the Denshi EX experimenter's kit (sorry for the link to my own site, but English descriptions of their stuff are hard to come by).

My only frustration is that there seems to be no good export channel for the EU and North America (that and the fact that their manuals are in Japanese, although with lots of photos).

I suspect the battery-powered projector will be a lot of fun (if you have $80 to spend, along with some film to wreck).

Gakken's Otona No Kagaku 'advanced science kits for adults' are great.

The Gakken Edison Cylinder phonograph using a plastic cup as the storage media has to be my favourite.

Now if only you could record your soundtrack for your Super 8 movie on it and somehow sync it up with the hand cranked projector. Then there would be no need for the moaning minnies who whine about the lack of sound film to complain any more...

That's actually been done several times in the past. As in 80-100 years past. Mostly w/ 16mm gear.

Yes, I remember seeing something in 9.5mm which was both a camera and projector. The name "Campro" springs to mind.

Unfortunately yes (if you don't rate telecine devices as projectors). The last "non-toy" Super8-projectors have been these models:

Fumeo is still in business, but CHC did have a very hard time to sell the projectors due to the high prices. Hence it's very unlikely that there will be another production run.
And Beaulieu stopped all Super8-/16mm-related activities and sold all remaining spare parts, ... to Wittner (that now acts as "Beaulieu Germany"). Nevertheless another production run is very unlikely, too.

It reminds me of a toy projector that you can get mail order in the UK trade paper Exchange & Mart back in the seventies.

Would be good if a Japanese manufacturer would come out with a new projector with all the latest electronics, computer controlled everything.

The problem is it would cost a fortune....like the Beaulieu and Fumeo models above.

Of course, it's just one of my silly day dreams. But when you have a new topic named "New 8mm projector from JAPAN" you would expect a gizmo filled with all the latest and greatest state of the art nano electronics and engineering breakthru's in design and not some cheap plastic toy.


I still have my very first Japan made motorized battery operated toy 8mm projector that I got as a child in the 70's, the Horipet 8 and it's still humming like a Honda.
