1014E History Inquiry

Post by Roster » Wed May 07, 2014 12:23 pm

Does anyone know what year the Canon 1014E was launched in North America? (71, 72 73?)

And during what years did Canon manufacture this camera?

I did an internet search but could not find definitive answers.

Thanks!

Canon says that the camera was marketed in April 1973:
http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/came ... =1971-1982

Super8data also says "marketed in April 1973":
http://super8data.com/database/cameras_ ... zoom_e.htm

Super8wiki says 1972-1979 (but for some cameras these are only the years in which the camera has been announced/discontinued/produced instead of the years where they were sold):
http://super8wiki.com/index.php/Canon_1 ... Electronic

Hence you can assume that "April 1973" is the correct answer. However this doesn't mean that the camera was already available worldwide at that time - but you can expect that the camera was at least available in Northern America a few months before Christmas 1973.

Thank you for that information.

I guess it's safe to say that if I had walked into a good quality or high-end camera shop in 1975 I could have purchased the Canon 1014E (research!)

Sounds like you're going to fake a camera's history for eBay: "I bought this camera in a high-quality camera shop in 1975..."

You nailed it. It's on ebay right now!

Nah, I'm just working on a piece of fiction that takes place in 1975. The protagonist needs to operate a Super 8 camera that was available in 1975 but purchased in an earlier year. (I also own a 1014E).

As for Super 8 in fiction, I've been getting hooked on a TV series produced a few years back called "The Killing" (the US version not the Danish original). At one point early in season one the cops find a Super 8 camera and roll of film used by the victim (oddly enough, a teenage girl, the series takes place only about three years ago). The cops run the film back and forth through the projector and eventually find a clue. If you like long form crime drama, it's worth checking out. I'm on season two now and the cops are still working on solving the killing of the teenage girl!

Wow! That 1975 American Cinematographer is a great 'Throw Back Thursday' type of read.

Thanks for posting that.
