Split the forum-stop the bickering?

Post by Old Uncle Barry » Sat May 25, 2002 8:55 pm

:?
I have noticed of late that the emergence of Super8 and its uses, particularly its final format are getting a bit on the heavy side.
Everyone out there has their pet end-format,and why not? This is a personal/professional choice. However, with the advances in modern technology which,as film users first,we must take on board and keep pace with developments.
This though, will still not placate those of you who think that celluloid is about to vanish, and,no amount of explanations of 'fors' and 'againsts' will it seems, alter anyones preferences. The only way this could happen is to split the forum into two camps: 1] Those who, like myself, prefer film to be used in its original concept i.e. projected on to a screen, and those whom 2] Will prefer to explore the undoubtedly wonderful electronic manipulation of the format and what lies ahead.
Splitting the forum though would be counter-productive.So why start getting hot under the collar when anyone mentions DV or whatever.
Personally I do not give a toss about the electronic side, but to those of you that do embrace it-fair wind to you all.No doubt you are mostly young and explorative persons that wish to take it to the edge of the envelope,so be it.
As for old farts like me,who have accrued a pile of very expensive film (celluloid origination) equipment do not wish to go down this road.We are quite happy in our quaint old ways. But thats the way it is guys.
One thing I am certain of though-there is room for us all.

i totally agree. Make movies, not war.
I don't get why those kind of "fights" regularly appear on forums like this one. The format one wants to use mainly depend on his project, some may want a dv cam because they are going to shoot in difficult conditions, or whatever, in documentaries for example. I use super8 because i love its look, and the producers that i met here in france love the pro aspect of this format. I use super8 because i secretly hope someday i'll blow up one of my project and see it on a big screen. And i use super8 because there are many meetings of people who project their movies on a wall, once a month, sharing their taste for celluloid.
If someone want to use dv, i can understand it, and he may have strong arguments, and i don't see why i should try to convince him that he should use another format. If he doesn't like super8, well, there's room for everyone like old uncle barry said.
I use NLE editing softwares to do a first editing of my work on my pc before splicing my precious original film.
I'm using a cement splicer and a computer, a projector and a md, a super8 cam to shoot and a video cam to transfer, and this is not contradictory. So, why don't we just stop being sectarians, and start making movies, using either super8 or video.

Don't fear technology. Technology is your friend.

Technology is indeed our friend, and advances are still being made with celluloid. As I said, there is room for all of us!

I think there is a fundamental difference between bickering and simply having a vigorous debate. Mattias and I have a go every month or so and, frankly, I enjoy it. He's intelligent and sticks to the topic at hand. I always learn something when we "argue".

But while I agree that bickering has no place in the forum, I am not one to stand by while incorrect information, rumor or flat out misinformation is handed out as "fact" nor am I one to keep my mouth shut if someone tells me that my opinion has no place on this forum. Sorry, but I'll only be so passive. If that is the bickering you are talking about, then I'm guilty as charged and will continue to be so at any time in the future, if need be.

Beyond that, I agree! Let's make super 8 movies!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go formulate a vigorous response for Mattias' last post.... :)

i agree with roger's post. all of it actually, except maybe for the part about responding to mattias' posts. i'll leave that to others, even though i'm often tempted... ;-)

:)

Everyones 'opinion' is valued and from such opinions are gleaned very useful information.
The danger is that we may just lose the plot somewhat if it gets out of hand by thinking that our individual chosen paths have the edge over others.

Clearing up

Post by David M. Leugers » Sun May 26, 2002 5:13 pm

I agree Uncle Barney. I think there is room here for all discussions, wether I personally agree or disagree with the topic. I just feel that this particular sight should not pander to the "let's all switch to video because it is (A) better than S-8mm film and (B) S-8mm film is going the way of the dinosaur " viewpoint. Heh, make your film on the format you like. I do like to learn about the new stuff coming down the pike, it may even help with my filmaking :) . No need to split the group. Let's try to keep most of the forum focused on FILM.
