Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

I really don´t understand why you go into so long descriptions about this and that to walk around the answer. You keep the HD files because they are not overkill. Simple as that. overkill for what? for whom? for my grand-ma? for a professional cinematographer? for viewing with family on a piss p...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

given the choice between a good SD transfer with good colors and contrast and a HD transfer with high pixel count but poor colors, i'll take the former any day. Ehhh, of course you would. You give one good alternative and one bad alternative, I´m not sure what you are thinking about this actuall...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

Also, no matter how good your SD transfer is, if you watch it on an HD monitor, then you are at the random mercy of how well a particular player or HD monitor handles a live up-convert. i think this is a very good point. so yeah, if one can get HD with the same color and contrast as a good SD trans...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

well, i thought i'll add some information and opinion about the topic since i believe i know enough about the topic to make for some interesting observations.. but here we are in needless (and unpleasant) arguments again. if you want to have a yes or no answer to the question "Is an HD Super 8 trans...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

I think you too often get stuck on technicalities. well, i think we just have a different philosophy. for me, it's not just important to know a simplified answer (ie. a general HD transfer will give more detail then a general SD transfer), but also the reasons behind it (or rather, why the above st...

Re: A quest to record good quality audio

well, as said, the most important part happens in the beginning of the chain. i also agree with bart that the type of mic makes a big difference. i recommend a flash card recorder precisely because the transfer to the PC is dead easy (and fast). if you want to use minidisc for some reason, then you ...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

...a HD transfer can capture quite a bit of more detail then SD transfers, and that 720p is usually enough... Well then we pretty much agree. :) yeah, but for different reasons :P The reason I used the SMPTE testfilm is of course because it IS a testfilm, and it will show any differenced much bette...

Re: Is an HD Super 8 transfer overkill?

well, it again it depends if we talk about downsampled SD or a transfer originated from an SD system. a well done downsampled SD transfer can capture most of the information in a typical super8 frame, and then it really comes down to contrast and color... ie. a PAL transfer from a spirit will usuall...

Re: A quest to record good quality audio

transfering to the computer over an analog line will give you two more conversions (one digital-to-analog and one analog-to-digital). if you have good components the loss is small, but it's critical that you set the levels properly (too loud and it clips, too low and the noise rises). also you shoul...

Re: A quest to record good quality audio

in my experience, the important points for good sound are (in this order): - good recording enviroment - good placement of mic - good quality mic - good mic preamp - good recorder so a minidisc can give you excellent sound if you have a good boom operator and use a good quality mic and preamps, whil...

Re: First Super 8mm 2K Scans

hi paul,

great to see that you have things up and running, registration looks very good (looking at the gate hairs).

is it possible that you post some original log DPX frames from the v200t and e64t on your website or on dropbox?

Re: Sending Film to Andec for processing

i think the pdfs are mainly for info, the order form would probably be: http://www.andecfilm.de/andecfilm-neu/sites/online-bestellung2e.html but yeah, the webpage is kind of a mess. ++ c. ps: if you need processing only you could probably just send the films, but i'd advise to shoot an email first t...

Re: Plus-X already HISTORY?

i have talked to kodak germany and kodak NY personally last week and both were out plus-x super8 and can't get any new stock. from what i've heard E64T is out in germany as well, but i haven't asked kodak about this directly. so it seems like the only option is going through resellers as long as the...

Re: Would you shoot a 25 foot roll of Super 8?

ok, kind of strange... i have shot quite a few V2 200T over the past 5 years or so and have excellent results but not perfect with both 1014 XL-Ss, 1 totally worn and one next to brand new. not strange at all, i also shot quite a lot of 200T (some 50+ rolls) which came out well, but then again some...

Re: Would you shoot a 25 foot roll of Super 8?

which of the original Kodak S8 material is most prone to blocking these days ? .. incase i give it a try? anyone? color negative has been the most problematic for me recently.. like Vision3 500T. (lovely film stock though). had a lot of problematic Vision2 200T charts in a freshly adjusted Beaulieu...
