Re: Even a reporter for the NYTimes doesn’t know the difference between film and Video

The Youtube link is a horrid VHS transfer of the film. I doubt the Feds have the resources to pull as much info out of that film as any post house with a Scan Station. "The film has become too brittle to run through a projector" I doubt that, but would not trust an old Bell & Howell with a $16 milli...

Re: Customer review: Universal 2K

I've asked myself the same question, and I'm moving to the 2K setup. The goal is to digitally reproduce what's on the film, good or bad, without the inherent flaws of digital getting into the mix. Things like digital noise or grain, pixelation, and more limited dynamic range. 2K may be overkill for ...

My New PTR Film Cleaning Assembly

After years of wanting some kind of simple particle transfer roller assembly for basic dust removal on 8/16mm films, I finally found one on Ebay last week. Nice little rig, weighs about 18lbs. I bought the rollers for $25 each, sold as slightly used. They appear to be fresh, but do not seem to be ad...

Re: kodak

Kodak Alaris also responded with a confirmation of 100 speed film. If I recall, Alaris is making the sheets, cutting for stills, and offloading sheets to Rochester Kodak for remjet, cut and load into carts.

Google Kodak Alaris. The comments are not encouraging. Dissatisfied employees, layoffs, difficulty making payroll. I think Kodak shoveled off all the failing divisions and products to Alaris and said go for it boys and good luck.
Maybe Alaris is banking on Ektachrome for a shot in the arm?

Re: kodak

don't really want to say this, but I don't think there will be a new Super8 camera nor Ektachrome coming from Kodak. I think they missed their window. It is really sad and I really would have hoped they could have gotten this out a year ago when the anticipations and hype was still there. Hype seem...

50D is sold out on their site. If it comes back, all is well. If it gets discontinued, then if worry.

Re: Customer review: Universal 2K

I like the new improvements so far with the sensors and software. The still frame feature is key. I just finished scanning a bunch if K40 R8 came out super sharp. You can also see the camera noise on its own, so I ordered my 2K package today. Really excited.

Re: Film storage

The conditions you store them is something to consider. Stick to a dry area indoors that doesn't get too hot or humid. I've come across films stored in attics, barns, garage rafters, damp basements ect... with significant degradation. I've also seen rust formed in old metal cans and reels. I just bu...

Re: The 16mm to HD, 4K or 2k Question

A lot of it probably has optical sound. With 60K feet and maybe sound, you could easily end up paying well over 10K to have all that scanned, especially if you want audio sync. You could buy a new Moviestuff 2K unit with 16mm gate and sound unit for less than $7K. The results are really nice. Make s...

Re: Universal now offering 2K and Audio modules!

I'm sitting back watching a scan right now of a 400ft spool S8 neg I shot in 2014. I've scanned this roll before before with the old software, probably with the Retro 8, but the colors are so much more accurate and so damn good! I adjusted the green and red sliders a tad but nothing drastic. Won't h...

Re: Transferring 16mm Prints

I'v gotten into scanning prints lately with the Retro unit and AEO light app. I've posted a couple on Vimeo but i'm not worried about anything over copy rights since i'm sharing it for free. I've been gathering prints recently because it's amazing to think of how much information is spooled up over ...
