Kodak rumors - new film stocks and hardware

Filmmaker and editor Nathaniel Dorsky was at the New York Film Festival last weekend and during his post-screening Q&A he said that he had met with Kodak CEO Jeff Clarke (although Dorsky did not mention Clark by name), and had projected old Kodachrome films for him and that Clarke loved them. Not su...

how to manually notch cartridges?

I have several un-notched cartridges (500T and 200T mostly, but a few others too), and although I know the size of the notch I want to make, I was wondering if anyone has advice on how best to actually do it. I was using needle-nose pliers to do some tests but they seem a little rough and imprecise....

Spectra Velvia 50D discontinued?

Does anyone know about Spectra's Velvia 50D filmstock? The Spectra website says it's "sold out" and when I called they didn't know when or if there would be any more. Wittner still has Velvia 50D for sale and maybe so does GK Film (?). I was counting on this as my favored replacement for Kodachrome,...

Expired Kodachrome from 1987

I have several rolls of Kodachrome 40 dated 1987. I shot one roll as a test in daylight, and it came back very faded. Can anyone recommend adjustments to make or techniques for shooting these remaining rolls with some interesting results? I'm not expecting them to look like fresh K40 but what will f...

K40 Cartrisge Serial Numbers

Hi-- Does anyone know how to date a Kodachrome 40 cartridge by the serial number (not batch number) printed on the cartridge label? I'm trying to figure out when a few rolls are from... I have one that is A287293 that I'm guessing is from 2004. Another one begins 150XXX.... Any help would be appreci...

Re: flatbed scanner suggestions?

Granfer-- The page you refer me to seems to be both out of date (referring to products frmo 2001 & 2002) and focused on scanning for telecine-like results, which is not my goal. I've certainly googled before posting the forum, but since this is a specialized request in a specialized forum, I figured...

flatbed scanner suggestions?

I'm looking for suggestions for a flatbed scanner to scan sections of Super8 film. I've been trying with an Epson Perfection 3170 Photo scanner, but it's not easy. Even in "professional" mode it has trouble recognizing the strip of film. If I place the film (uncut, from the beginning of a reel) in o...

processing 4X

I have several rolls of 4X. Can anyone recommend labs (preferably in the USA) for processing? Pac Lab is here in NYC but they are not consistent since the new management took over. I'm not looking for telecine, just processing...

Re: Kodak T-Max 100 Direct Positive Developing Kit

The Kodak kit should work fine. I've used it many times for Plus-X and Tri-X, using Superior Bulk spiral tanks, and bucket method. I'm traveling now and don't have my forumulas and processing times with me. But there are a variety of sources on the web. When are you planning on doing your processing...

Re: Preferred Audio Recording Device

I had been using a miniDisc recorder but that data is compressed, as far as I understand, so outputting it later was a drag for my audiophile pals, who really wanted something better to work with. I now use a Sony DR-1, which is similar to the Zoom H4 that others have written about. It records onto ...

Super8 in Buenos Aires?

Can anyone recommend any resources (stores, screening series, festivals, archives, etc) in Buenos Aires? I plan to be there in April, visiting friends, and would love to see what the city has to offer. I'm curious to find places that sell equipment, as well as fresh film. But I'd also love to connec...

Lighting Sources in Berlin?

I'm going to be in Berlin, and want to shoot indoors. Can anyone recommend sources of bright continuous (500W minimum) tungsten lighting in Berlin? I'll be there February 5-19, mostly for the Berlinale, but with a little extra time for shooting. In the US I usually use any number of lighting set-ups...

Re: Super 8 and airport x-ray machines

Filmmaker James June Schneider did an experiment, sending rolls of film in CHECKKED LUGGAGE and keeping track of them. He made a film of the results (info below from his website): DEGRADATION #1: X-XRAY Part 1. Shroud of Security 3'30", 16mm, color, 2007 One hundred feet of un-shot 16mm (Kodak-7289,...

Re: Best Telecine for Vision2 Negative shot at 18fps?

Thanks for your analysis of what is happening. I'll be sure to poll future post houses on exactly what they do before sending work their way. As for whether it's a problem or not: It IS a problem because the footage now looks more like video, than film, whether its played as a file, or burned to a D...
