super 8 to HD24p

Check out Bonolabs.com on there specials page. They now offer packages of either 7217 or 7218 with processing, prep and a best light telecine direct to hard drive in uncompressed HD 10-bit (23.98) for just under 500 US for six roles. NOt a bad deal for the serious minded super 8 film maker. With the uncompressed HD, this could serve as a poor mans DI. Good news for the ever growing Super 8 scene. By the way, I don't work for them, just think that they are offering some great deals.

I hope this is as good as it seems...

$500 for 6 rolls and transfer to high def is very very pricey, but probably worth it to get them transferred at true 1080i

Is there any samples footage or even shots out there?

They don't have anything on the web yet, but perhaps they have a demo reel they might give out. By the way, it isn't 1080i, but 1080p @ 23.98 or DVCPro HD also at 23.98. You could probably do better if you could find someone with a good super 8 gate for their Spirit or Shadow. Then again, If you were making a high end 3 to 5 minute film, or something like The Light of Eons, which was transfered to HD24p and looks phenominal, then $500 is worth it. I intend to use them for a sequence in a short film I am involved with. I certainly will share my experience.

For the price of 12 or 24 rolls of S8 to HD, I'd purchase a workprinter from Roger and hookup a borrowed Sony Cinealta HD camcorder...

Are you aware of the Cinealta prices?
And what about the cost of an HD capture card?
If you have made a work so good that it needs HD, better give the job to transfer professionals...

Absolutely. While I appreciate Gianni's enthusiasm, I always encourage film makers to use the best transfer they can afford. If it is important, send it to a Rank house or whatever premium transfer service suits your project. The WorkPrinter is a terrific way to do quality transfer if you are on a budget or just enjoy the process. Some really nice results are possible but, like Marc said, if you have film so good that it needs HD, better give the job to a top transfer house.

Transfer to miniDV.
Edit on computer.
Burn a DVD.
Shop the DVD around Hollywood and get a big studio to pay for transfer to HD and re-edit.

If I had my own Cinealta kit, I would probably not be using super 8! Maybe a humble Scoopic and or consumer HD instead. I forgot the smiley. Felt like pointing out the milestones of this multimedia roadshow. :-#

The first time I saw a HD prototyped (1991 in Japan) it cost many millions. Then IIRC 98-2000-ish, a basic kit HD VCR & Camera kit was bordering one or two million. Now highend HD is a few hundred grand, and consumers are marketed HD for a few grand.

The retailers confusion marketing will soon have millions of consumer clamoring for HD. Once that's occured, all new telecine customers, and even previous ones who have their home movies on VHS, or DVD and Mini DV, will now need "HD" telecine.

I have been poking around the web and $500 for 6 rolls of Vision 2 stock, processing, prep and telecine direct to hdd is actually not a bad price at all. You would be paying the same at either Pro8mm or Spectra and they don't even offer uncompressed HD or the hard drive option. This last bit saves you the cost and trouble of dealing with a tape deck. You can burn DVDs for viewing copies and take a firewire drive to a post house for the final CC and print to tape. Again, this is for the more professionally minded filmmaker, not everyone can afford nor needs HD.

I'm curious to know why you think this is such a bad approach?

I'm sure we've all heard stories of film-makers who went to the expense of finishing a film at excessive cost, only to find that no distributor was interested in picking it up.

why are you sorry? i never wanted to be your friend anyway. especially since you seem to completely lack a sense of humor. my mother didn't have to tell me to surround myself with people i can actually communicate with.

because it has hardly ever happened before (not even in the el mariachi case contrary to popular belief) and it's not likely to happen very often in the future either.
