How do you record dialog?

Post by Actor »

Crystal sync assumes some kind of crystal accurate sound recorder.

Quiet camera includes blimped and barneyed cameras.

Cable sync includes both Pilotone and PC setups.

For direct sync sound: Canon 1014 XL-S with Pedro's pulse sync and Mattias software. Sound I record with my Panasonic DVX100A camcoder.

I also use Pedro's pulse synch box, with a Nizo 6080 and a Sony MD walkman. I often just leave the minidisc in continuous record mode while I am filming intermittently; that way I get lots of useful atmos in between the synched audio sections.

Noisy Bolex far away, or the Nikon S8 far away, with a quiet video camera up close. Work printer transfer, stretch and shrink or clip a frame here and there.
Dubbing in post is also a technique already worked out as long as the film is already on the PC.

For my upcoming SF short I'll use my GL2 to record location audio, I guess using some kind of slate to provide a rough sync. The camera is fairly noisy, but I hope there will be some reasonable location audio, if not to use outright, then to give a basis for Foleying all the effects.

i use #3. i also use #4. and pilotone cable sync with a nagra. if i'm outdoors, that might count as "quiet camera, cable sync".

I have only experimented with sound filming because all of my films are home movies.

But, I have used an Elmo 1012 SXL shooting at 24fps and recorded dialog on an old/handy tape recorder. I synched the film and sound when viewing using the recorder a synch cable to the Elmo ST1200HD and a clap or some other sound and image to sync and go from there.

I dont do anything else yet because I havent learned it or can't afford it yet, I am a college student. Money is quite the object.

but thats the best way to learn... without programs or additional gear. best to start out with nothing than to get everything first.. my feeling is you will get a handicap and not understand the fundamentals of the process. i could get some software and other goodies to help me sync up sound buti choose to do it as old fashioned as i can.. and as manually as i can... slating before and after the scene... i follow the same philisophy in my recording studio.. whereas the average studio wil have a computer or two with the latest audio recording software and every plug in you can imagine, i choose top have a room full of racked gear.. cords... midi cables... processors... machines that kick out the heat.. keyboards...

ahh but i digress...

I chose other, because like others I use many of these techniques. Depending on the project. I do 3 & 4 most, somethimes 1 using a nagra.

I am also using Pedros sync gear, with a Sharp MD recorder, the sharps are easier to set the recording gain.
