Old Duffer needs help!!

Post by Old Uncle Barry »

I'm probably about three hundred years out of date, but I see Wittner-Kinotechnic is selling Regular8 (Standard8) Kodachrome40,process paid,on 25ft double run spools and 100ft spools for H8 owners.
Their stock is fresh,dated 2006.
Fine.
But just how does one buy from them? What the hell is a postbank account?Does that mean I cannot send a check as we are pounds and they are funny-money euros?

Come on you young filmers, give us a clue! :(

You can do a bank-wire to them. I always thought this was a universal way of paying. You can contact your bank for that. I think cheques will be ok; but they will probably only send you the films when the checks have cleared, which can take up to six weeks internationally. Otherwise contact Wittner for paying alternatives. They do answer english mails in english.

I thought these days the universal way of paying for goods was with credit cards. Trouble is I know charges for this can be very high in Germany.

Bank wires are very costly for the customer, best avoided. Can you send euros in cash? Or have your bank prepare a euro cheque?

UK banks generally charge £20 - £25 to wire money into a european bank. Totally unjustified - mabey £5 would be ok but 20 - 25 is a piss take. I have this sort of problems before.

Unfortunately Wittner do not have a Credit card facility.

If they did, and produced an English version of their site, I think they would substantially increase their turnover.

and for somebody living next door to the shop even shipping is free, but it's not likely to help either the old uncle or the rest of us in non euro countries. (i would have assumed we were the majority too by the way, but i may be mistaken)

Right, I never understood why they didn't do that.

They could accept PayPal and add 4% to the price due to PayPals fee.
That would be a good thing.

I ordered many items there but had to use a website translator.
3 months ago, the only way to pay was by Bank wire but if you contact them, there might be an option (they are pretty fast to answer and understand english). I wouldn't mind ordering for you but you would have to pay twice the post which would end up to be the same moneywise.

Try economy money mover or something similar. I regularly wire money from the UK to the USA, cost is about £14 per transaction. Given that the US banks are in the stone age compared to European ons I would assume transfer from UK to Germany would be cheaper.

If they don't want to take credit cards, then paypal is aother option.

There is something that is called EU-transfer or something like that.
It is cheaper but has some restrictions that probably won´t affect your purchase.

Uncle Barry....
I am in the USA. The last time I ordered from Wittner, they took my credit card. That was maybe 4 or 5 months ago. I asked them in email if it was OK, and they said yes. It is not written on there web site anyplace that they take CC. (at least not any place I could find).

I am not sure about the UK.

From the UK, registered cash is a cheaper alternative to bank transfer.

Sending cash otherwise has become a no-no since all airmail is being x-rayed. Shows up the metal bits in notes beautifully! Then they vanish ... .

If cash is the only way, wrap it around a bit of aluminium sheet (1.5 mm ish) and put it in a padded bag. That seems to fool the thieving security wallahs.

:( Well everyone, thank you for your input. All of those alternatives really do make purchasing from abroad (Wittner in particular) anogo area.
I managed to contact them (Wittner) and they stubbornly refuse any form of credt card transaction. Its money up front or up yours!!

This Double8 must still be popular stuff as currently,Widescreen Centre is out of stock-I usually get it from them anyway,so I will continue with their services.

Is this a very recent thing? I've payed for many, many ebay.de/.com items with cash in an envelope for a long time without a single issue. In fact thats how I paid Andec for the one and only film they processed for me. I do put a piece of kitchen foil in the envelope to stop the postman from holding it up to the light and seeing its money. The only time I had one go missing was when I paid for insurance and the PO wrote that it contained cash, and the amount across the front! It took me about 6 months and a few very angry letters to get my money back from them, so I wouldn't recommend insurance!
