gate polishing

Post by greyskale »

i have read somewhere about people using a rock tumbler filled with grain (rice or wheat i think) to polish their gates after widening them. has anyone tried this who can provide some feedback?

Only one side of the gate is being modified - the rest is completely untouched. There's no point in polishing the entire thing. And remember that some gates are plastic and therefore delicate. I'm not sure how they'd handle such treatment.

Personally, I use an extremely small square diamond file to widen the gate (in a table vice), and then deburr and polish with a Dremel. The biggest challenge is being careful not to scratch the top or bottom of the gate.

If the gate is chromed, I should use some soft metal polish paste or even tooth paste. Tooth paste also contains some abrasive material.
Be careful with any kind of polishing, because the chrome layer is very thin. If the gate is bare metal, you can polish as much as you desire.

EDIT: I must learn to read the question before I answer
Yes, removing the burr with a Dremel is what I did, too.
