Eumig P-8 Imperial sound sync projector for Reg Double 8mm

Post by studiocarter »

New Eumig P-8 Imperial projector features BUILT-IN SYNCHRONIZER for tape recorder.
A magazine article from, Popular Photography Magazine, Dec. 1957, page 154 and continued on page 199 has one full column of text and three photographs.
Quote, "The projector allows the movie maker to add sound to his movies, using any tape recorder."
Made in Austria.
anybody have one or experience with this one?

I can't copy every article, there is just too much, but this one was too good not to mention. Anybody related to the factory?

There were several models of the P8 with this mechanism on the back. Essentially, an arm connected to a rheostat varied the projector motor speed to keep tape tension constant, so keeping the film in step with the tape. Similar facilities could be obtained with a Synchrodek.

These mechnisms were fine for music and commentary but were not quite up to lip sync.

Several variants of the P8 Imperial included: single motor/lamp switch; separate motor and lamp switches; freeze frame facility; auto-thread mechanism. There are plenty about and, like all P8s solidly built and reliable.

The P8 Phonomatic was another version. Eumig also made a portable tape recorder with their own cassette that could be switched on from the camera. No really for lip synch but the idea was to record background as you filmed and then transfer it to a tape recorder to work with the Phonomatic.

Warning. Eumig projectors pre-halogen use the A1/193 and evidently this is now in the DoDo droppings category of availability. So if you have one hang on to it.
