Any Comments About Crystal Control Unit from The Film Group?

Post by Guest »

Just wanted to see if anyone has ever used a crystal control unit manufactured/installed by The Film Group (of Wethersfield, CT), and if so, what were your experiences with the setup? Did the CCU seem to work well, and did the audio sync up properly with the transferred film (assuming that the transfer was done on a super 8 telecine at 24 FPS). I have a Beaulieu 4008ZMII, and if I decided to have a CCU added to my camera, does anyone know if there would be any modifications made to the body of the camera (holes drilled, sockets added, etc.), or would this CCU somehow work without modifying the camera body?

For those of you not familiar with The Film Group, they manufacture and install crystal control units for certain models of super 8 cameras. For more info, check out their CCU webpage at http://users.aol.com/fmgp/sync8.htm

If you are not shure with TFG, you can have your 4008 converted to crystal at Bavaria Film in Munich. They are specialized on Beaulieu. Their crystal control fits totally into the camera body, and as far as I know, without any external cable and box. Only a small selector switch, to set it to crystal mode. Looks much better to me.

Do you happen to have the correct email or website for Bavaria film? the only one I find is an actual production company. Perhaps it is the same company but Im not sure. I want to crystal sync my 4008 and it sounds like their solution is far cleaner than TFG. With external battery packs and remote shutter release its best to avoid additional external connections to make life and shooting simpler.

4008 may be too loud for sound work

Post by souper8 »

Hey George,
I had a 4008 and it was a pretty loud camera. Why don't you buy a 6008 and add the quartz module instead? In my opinion the later models are much better for sound work.

Hey souper8 thanks for the response.

The reason is - I just spent $ 300 for a total overhaul at Duall. Reason=better to use a known quantity camera that has been completely gone over. Also the build quality is great on the camera. I have some fairly long telephoto lenses and figured that using the longer lense with a barney might be the way to go. I had also heard that the camera noise was mostly due to the guillitine shutter rather than motor etc. Its interesting that you have found this to not be the case.

I have seen a few 6008 and 7008 for sale on ebay but am nervous buying a camera that may need an overhaul or be a piece of $*^&!

George,

the homepage is http://www.bavaria-cinehome.de
there you´ll find a general email contact address. But you can send a copy directly to Dr. Hoefer who speaks English very well: ch.hoefer@bavaria-film.de
Tell them your exact model, and ask how the modification is made, any external components etc, prices...

I never worked with a 4008, but when I hold it in hands, I noted that it has the biggest and brightest viewfinder I´ve ever seen. If the ground glass allows reliable focus setting, it must be a very fine camera to do creative filmshooting with!
