Auto-exposure on a Canon 814xls back to life!

Post by vegetable man »

I bought one of these "cheap" (I think). Everything seems to work fine except the auto-exposure, that made the f-stop go to 1,4 and stay there. I tryed everything (that really was like nothing), I search all the forum's topics about the 814, and nothing. Finally, I have find the way to make it work: rotating the exposure knob between the AUTO and the AE LOCK.

I hope it works for all of you with the same problem (because I saw this is a common problem).

Damnit! I read this with such enthusiasm and ran to check if this worked with my 814xls. No such luck. Mine sticks on the underexposure red warning area past f45 when on auto. I can use it manually, but when I switch to auto, the F reading literally spins all the way round to past f45. Your inbetween switch trick doesn't appear to change this :(

Try to shake rattle an roll the cam pretty hard while you let it run - until it possible unclogs. It may also be banges som geltly into say a rubber piece or alike to see if it helps.

This problem is most likly the iris or just the f-scale mechanism that is stuck in old dried lube. No big issue but not nessescary easy to fix.

I have the impression that the iris when set to manual should never be at F45 or f1.4. Seems like it may stick in old lube if stored this way for some time.
