Film cleaning supplies in australia

Post by sonickel »

hello everyone,

I've just checked out some Super 8 film I shot a while back, (on a proper editor...) and it's all badly scratched and dusty, through not cleaning/lubricating the film and projector.

However, I haven't a clue where to get film cleaning/lubricating fluid, soft cloths etc. Ecco Film Cleaner and Webril Wipes aren't available here.

What stuff can I get on this continent, and where, so I don't have to import from America?

cheers

Don't know what you can get in Adelaide but here in Brissy I just went to Photocontinental and explained what I needed and got a jar something (can't remember now the name or active ingredient) - even though Super 8 is old I sthink film cleaners still should be round - I assume it's the same stuff to clean negative and slides -- don't know but I reckon if you jsut go to a large and reputable photo shop they should have it in stock

Go to a local cinema and ask them what they use on their 35mm films. The same stuff will work for any film guage. Maybe they'll sell you some if there's no place you can buy it locally.

Photoco Camera House in the central market sell film cement for editing, so there may be a chance that they might be able to order in some sort of film lubrication as well.

Hello again

I went to Photoco in the cental market, he couldn't help me at all! (Though I did buy a nice anti-static cloth....)

I may try Eden Photographics next, or Adelphi (who do telecine), but I get the feeling that people around here think film is a lost cause.

As for Camera Electronic, I couldn't find a list of specific cleaning products, prices, or whether they'd be suitable for Super 8.

(BTW I'm looking for a cleaner that also lubricates. My film is getting nasty scratches.....)

Help!

I think you are right...

It's a pity that Adelaide Movie and Hobby Center closed down. If I recall, they did have some film cleaner...but the owner was a bit of a shark.

These scratches on your film sound like a bit of a worry. Are you cleaning the projector gate after every film? I hope it's not worn out parts on the projector that's causing this. With certain Elmo models there is a green part which you thread the film into which can begin to scratch film after it becomes worn. But these parts are still made and can be easily replaced.

Don't you have cinemas? Don't they project film? Surely they must clean and lubricate their films with something.

Camera Electronics (Perth) sold me film cleaner suitable for movie films it is:

"Film Cleaner" 500ml and it cost me $16.00. The film cleaner is manufactured by:

Minilab Supply Store Pty Ltd

Camera Electronics also stock some of the Hama range of super 8 accessories and can also order items.

If you contact Camera Electronics by phone the best person to speak to is Ron Nell, (he now only works part time in store and so is not there every day) or email them a question for the attention of Ron Nell.

Another contact who carries some movie accessories and film is:
