My First Color Negetive DIY Transfer

Post by T-Scan »

I finally ran some V2 500T through the Work Printer tonight. Then played around with it in Vegas 5. its not all that easy, just as i've heard. i think i can get a lot better once i knack the plug-ins more. the grain is very apparent in my transfer, nothing like the Flying Spot grain on the same footage. here's yet another still from my spooky band shoot.. WP, single chip MiniDV, Sony Vegas 5.

Here's a still from the Flying Spot transfer. much better, but maybe i can get close enough for the money eventually. speaking of the Flying Spot, may i quote "When you shoot it, you will see where that extra money went." Eric Stoltz, Pulp Fiction

Hi, may be you need to open a little bit the video camera´s iris, this way the image contrast will improve.

I like the work you are doing T-Scan.

I think doing a A-B comparison between what Flying Spot did and what you can get out of your workprinter is a issue that we are all interested in. You are certainly pushing the boundaries with the above pictures.

Would a better test of a transfer vs Workprinter be preformed if you looked at a well balanced frame grab from some well exposed film shot in daylight or other ideal conditions?

Keep up the good work! We will all say we "knew you when" when we watch your videos on MTV next year!

Thanks Jack.. and good point, i want to shoot some 200T outside this weekend and test it with the WP, will be a lot easier to correct. the dimness of my picture has to do with my correction. requires a lot of tweeking to keep the grain down and keep the colors on that film. the FS didn't have to do any tweaking after their scan, and i plan to use them more for all my serious band shoots.

How much film did you get transferred at flying spot and how much did you pay in the end with cleaning and everything. Could you break down roughly how much you spent there.
thanks andy

I ran 8, 50ft carts. I think processing and ultrasonic prep $116 at Forde. Flying Spot charged about $200.. well worth it if you plan to use Neg stocks for a serious project. the pic does not do justice for the actual raw footage they sent back.

T-scan, I know that I'd really like to see some of your outdoor 200T footage. Will you be giving us a sample to view? I'm interested in seeing results from some of this filmstock shot in the dim light of early morning or late evening.
Is there already some 200T footage uploaded in the "Movies" section of this site? If so, which one/ones? I wish that these clips were marked clearly with film type, transfer method, etc... so that they could be analyzed with all of that information in mind.
