DIY S8->Video Capture Off Screen with Sony Hi8 CCD-TR840E

[S8 Booster]

Initial tests with the Sony Hi8 CCD-TR840E showed that it was completely useless for DIY transfer from images projected on a screen. Extreme flicker occoured and no real manual setting options prevented from experimenting. Incidentally I found out that by shutting off the "steady shot" function the flicker was almost completely gone and the recordings turned out very good for homemovie purposes. However, not comparable to results from the Workprinter services.

Adding a clip that were planned to show the excellent livesound of S8MAG shot on a K40S this summer but the impedance bwteen my projector & cam turned out wrong and there was a considerable hum as well.

Basically everything is wrong but it is quite flicker free. The jerkiness is due to a lot of changes in film speed.

Captured off screen by Sony Hi8 CCD-TR840E at 25 fps/16:9 Anamorf format (Because it auto disable the "steady shot") although not originally anamorf S8 format.Reformatted to 16:9 in AP.
Captured to Adobe Premiere at 25 fps.
Edited to 15 fps.
Converted to 10 fps for posting.

Sound is on initial and end part only. Original sound is magifcient.
Sound of this clip is distorted due to a impedance mismatch.

Will be corrected and reposted with HQ sound.

Nearly all recently-manufactured Sony camcorders with digital image stabilization have a default shutter speed of 1/100. Turning off steadyshot also resets the shutter to 1/60. That would explain your flicker situation.

I used a sony tr-140 digital 8 to trasfer some film. The imgae looked okay during day scenes but night scenes looked bad. there was no plug in for super 8 sound audio or any audio plug in for that matter. to make matters worse, the sony has no tv frame line in the viewfinder or lcd screen. The color correction features were ok.
