The most amazing little super 8 film

Post by MovieStuff »

This is probably reallllllllly old news but I was surfing around on the net and stumbled across this web page that has what is, essentially, a shot by shot remake of the original Star Wars. It was all shot on Super 8. The down load ends up with a really tiny picture but the work these kids put into this thing is really amazing. If you forget what you're looking at, some of the shots look like the real thing!

Anyway, it's a lot of fun.

I remeber seeing that. I think that they are from somewhere in Ma. They used one of those Gaf cameras with the funny handles and the robots are made from cardboard. I think it turned out to be about an hour or so long.

I enjoyed that! Neat to see what people are willing to do. Was this a filmschool project?

Learning by copy is what painters do for centuries. It's sad that this is not used with new media (understand photography, cinema and video). How great it would be to find a school where each week, students would try to reproduce a scene from a movie : this week, a scene from Allen's Manathan, next week a scene from Cassavetes's Opening Night, and so on... And why not star wars ....

I'd love to do a re-make of just about any Cassavetes film or some other films that don't demand a lot of production expense. It's legal to do so as long as you don't distribute the film. But how do you tell the cast and crew "We're going to make a movie but no one's ever going to see it"?

These guys were featured in Cinemagic #4 back in the late 70's.

I remember being amazed at the picture of their R2D2. They said they were using "The Story of Star Wars" as their soundtrack.

I've always wondered what happened to them and their film! Mystery solved. Thanks Roger :)

But doesn't that fit the description of virtually every super 8 film ever made? ;)

Stop it. You're being unnecessarily cruel.

Not quite. There's a difference between it turning out that way and knowing up front that it's going to be that way. It's the difference between "hope springs eternal" and "abandon all hope ye who enter here."

Ha-ha! Yes, I guess your right. Now that I think of it, behind every super 8 production is a director dead certain that HIS film is going to create a paradigm shift in the film industry when, in reality, he'll be lucky if he can get through one cartridge without jitters or massive under-exposure. Who needs camera tests, fill light or distribution when concept is everything?

Ooooo. Am I being cynical? I shouldn't post on low blood sugar....

there's a difference between something being legal and not getting into trouble for doing it, and i wouldn't advice anyone who's not a lawyer to tell people what's legal and what's not unless it's obvious. *that* could get you into trouble.
