I need a new projector - What are thoughts on best bang for buck? Specifically, what does anyone think of the Bell & Howell 10 MS w/ variable speed for film transfer? What would we pay for this?

Thanks
Jay.

I think I had one like that before. The 10 MS is too plasticky.

I will recommend the Sankyo 2000H. This has a variable speed, solidly built, stable image - just a high quality projector.

If will also choose the Sankyo's over the Chinons. If you can get Elmo's with variable speeds, these are even better but price will be much higher.

Price/performance - to me it's the Sankyo 2000H.

Thanks. Can you tell me the difference between the Sankyo 2000 and the Sankyo 1000?

the 1000 has an 8v-50w lamp , the 2000h has a 12v-100w lamp: about
25 percent brighter . internally these projectors are different as well-
i've repaired about 40(!) . the 1000's common problems are the
brass bushings on the takeup spindle becoming so worn and sloppy
that the clutch that allows it to run in reverse no longer engages in
forward. also, the claw on these machines is very delicate + is prone
to the tip snapping off when someone accidentally loads a film with the
gauge selector set wrong = instant doorstop / boat-anchor!
the bushing problem can be fixed with carefully machined shims.

2000h's seem to be more reliable + better constructed , but are also newer of design and manufacture - maybe haven't had as much time to break yet.

chinons are prone to the cheap plastic spindle hubs falling apart from
minor accidents. i'd stay away from the ones made in hong-kong unless
being sold for cheap (there's worse out there !)

i have worked on a few elmos - pretty solid . eumigs are nice
too ... no var speed though. Ricoh trioscope and fuji projectors are well made and sell for next to nothing.

no sense in paying more than $50 - $100 for a dual 8 silent projector

The Eumig Super8mm 9xx series (S905, S910 etc..) all have variable 18-24FPS speeds. Eumig P8 Series of Regular 8mm projectors have 0-18FPS variable speed. No Dual Eumig projector with variable speed comes to mind. It is a shame that the Eumig 610D and Mark M Dual projectors do not have variable speeds.

Thanks Joey for the info. I just received a 2000H for $99 from eBay. I'm real happy with it - nice, solid, compact little machine.
