Post by cineandy »

Hi
my canon 310xl is overexposing, what kind of light sensor does this camera have. After reading the article on the nizo s56,i wonder if a cds sensor is fitted if so can it be renewed.
How about the canon 514xls does this cam have a limited life....Think the 1014xl-s senors are different??

I would assume that it uses a cds cell and don't see any reason why it couldn't be replaced. The problem would most like be that unless you replace it with an identical cell (and even then) you would probably need to recalibrate it in some way, which might not be the easiest thing to do. I just recieved a repair manual for this camera, problem is it is in the form of microfiche, whenenever I get around to trying ot scan it or whatever I will take a look and try and find out more info if no one else provides anything useful.

Canon 310XL Overexposure problem

Post by Jim Carlile »

In regards to questions about overexposure with this fine camera:

The 310 XL has a 1.0 lens and absolutely no through-the-lens metering that would take away any available light. Because of this it will seriously overexpose during average outdoor use. The camera was designed to be used in extreme available light situations.

Solution? Camera is designed to be used with a 2x Neutral Density filter over the lens, and the red little waterhouse-stop lever at the external metering lens ( top of the camera) pulled up.

Using one or the other and not both together will spell exposure disaster. In general, when used outdoors, spin a neutral density filter over the lens, and then pull up the red stop to indicate to the external meter that the light has been cut down through the taking lens (that's what the waterhouse stop is for). This should solve the problem.
