super8 & bluescreen

Post by nagaarjuna »

I´m planning to shoot a music-video on super8 and transferring it to video, then comes the question: Once done, would it be possible to make bluescreen effects in post? Has anyone any experience with doing this on material originated on super8? Will the grain/hair/flimmer-hazard be too much to gamble on it?

Best wishes,

I saw an old ( 80's ) pro bluescreen super8 shot music video & there was no problem on it. Go for it !

I personally don't see any reason why it wouldn't work, but I have never done it myself. Like with most things I would suggest shooting a test and going through the whole bluescreening process before you start shooting any project that will require it.

The problem isnt with the chromakey its with the telecine transfer. A DV transfer will give you all the 4.1.1 compression issues. A rank transfer would would work great but is expensive. I have done quite a bit of greenscreen transfer. I would strongly suggest you shoot greenscreen if the transfer will be to video. Blue is extremely noisy and will create all kinds of problems when you pull your matte. When in video dont use bluescreen!!

I also use Commotion pro for their fantastic and relatively reasonable primatte keyer.

Try to avoid any real fine details and you should be alright. I find that shrinking the matte and using a border helps overcome many of the compression issues of DV. For example, hair is a total monster!!! Go for the bald look if you can. lol
