how to treat film before projection?

Post by nagaarjuna »

I just got my k 40 films back for development, all thirteen not a single missing! Now I just need to know the best way to protect my films before projecting and filming them on video, and I´d be very happy to know where I could buy the needed chemicals in Oslo, Norway, fast, as I need to get it done rapido!

I'm not too sure on the chemicals. But you probably don't need any chemicals, unless if the film is old.

Add a few feet of leader to each end of the reels, so if there are any projector problems, it'll eat up the leader, instead of your shots.

Good Luck

Preparing films

I recommend putting your 50ft reels onto larger 400ft reels for protection and the larger reels do not put nearly as much "curl" stress on your film during storage. I would cement splice a good 6ft of Kodak S-8mm film leader (stay away from cheap plastic leader = it shrinks and can only be spliced by tape splicing) to your first roll. Then I would wind that reel onto a 400ft take-up reel and cement splice the head of your second reel to the end of the first reel and continue until you have seven reels on your 400ft take-up reel. Then splice another 6 ft of leader to the tail end of the 400ft reel. Do this procedure again for your remaining six reels onto another 400ft take-up reel. Clean the film using recommended cleaning cloths or Webril Wipes moistened with a quality film cleaner such as Ecco or others as you wind the film back onto a 400ft reel you want to keep your film on. Take an extra-fine point Sharpie pen and write on the head leader identifying what the film material is "My Film" and which reel "Reel 1" for both of your 400ft reels. Always remember, leader is cheap and S-8mm projectors love to eat film so protect your valuable footage and don't scrimp on the leader. Also when it comes to film, clean and lube, clean and lube. Not only will your films project nicely without dirt and other distracting defects showing on the screen, but they will be protected and stay pliable for your lifetime. Good luck and hope your footage turned out.

I am wondering where to get the leaders, splicing tape (my preference), cleaning & lubricating fluid, and all the necessary stuff to prepare some old films for transfer. I remember there was a a post on the forum (probably archived long ago) on where to get all of the stuff. Some advice on what to do to care for the old film in preparation for transfer would be helpful as well. Trying to plan ahead for this winter and the indoor projects. Don't mean to redirect nagaarjuna's original question, but this seemed an appropriate thread to ask.

I think you can get whatever you need at http://www.kodak.no / Kodak Norge AS
1414 TROLLÃ…SEN Tlf 66 81 81 81.

A clean projector free of dust is recommended.
