Question on 200T film from Super8sound

Post by Guest »

Hi, I've been doing some shooting on the 200T Pro 8/74 film from Super8sound and waiting on results. Just interested to see if anyone else has used this film and what they think of it. I have a question on the telecine end, it says on the film that they don't do prints for projecting, but it must be xferred on a Rank Cintel... does that mean I'm going to have to pay for a fancy telecine with Super8sound? Ta.

I like negative stocks - especially the slower ones (50, 100). The 200 is a great stock. Its grain is good but not as great at K40, then again what is? However, its color rendering looks like modern film instead of older look of K40.

Regarding transfer - yes you will need to. Rank is the best way to do it. However, Roger (Moviestuff) I think offers the service through his DV8 system. Basically he will white balance his camera in order to remove the orange layer in negative stocks.

Good luck

Unfortunately, we no longer offer negative transfer. I can count on one hand the number of rolls we got and, while it worked okay, it was a huge hassle for us. Also, we had a key piece of image processing equipment go down that was used for inverting the negative image as well as color correction and it was too expensive to replace or repair for the limited demand. At this point, we transfer positive stocks only.

Sorry. :(

Just a question Roger:

Have you examined the possibility of doing the invertion and orange mask removement in post production in for example Adobe Premiere?
It might be an option that you transfer the negative films "as is" by the WP without any colour correction and then do the rest in AP.

I use the old MAC 4.0 version so there might be better options than I have got but in my AP the film can be inverted by 1 click. Removing the orange masking is a bit trickier but there are several filters that should be capable of doing this like:

•Colour Replace
•Colour Pass
•Colour Offset
•Colour Balance and
•Filter Factory

to mention a few.

I have not done this my self yet but it got to be possible.

What certainly works is to export the film as a filmstrip file to Photoshop and remove the orange layer there. It is fairly simple by adjusting the "curves". It can be inverted there as well.

I just rang the lads at the widescreen centre and the prices for telecine for the 200T is phenomenal (ie over £200 stg for under 20 mins of stock).

It says on the box that processing is included.. if i go for processing and not telecine does anyone know what they give you back (sorry, guy on phone not very helpful when i asked for alternative suggestions!)... and if you can then get it telecined elsewhere?

otherwise my 200T may never see the light of day! and i've shot some cool stuff...

cheers

transfer

you might try bumping it to 16mm and getting it transferred to video from that. If not, you'll just get negative back.

if you dont pay for the transfer from super8sound you will get back your film but it wil be negative so if you try and project it you will see a negative image(black is white and white is black plus an orange mask), who knows you may like this effect :-) but generally it is not a good idea tod o much because negative film damages easier than reversal. You then have 2 options, you can send your film to someone to transfer to video and convert to a positive image in the process. or you can print it to 16mm or 25mm, the video transfer will be much cheaper, trust me on that :-) Dont give up on finding a cheap transfer solution just yet, we may be able to work something out with roger. I plan on gettin setup to do it myself at some point, but since school is starting in a few days I dont know when that will be.

Roger: Can you still whitebalance out the orange mask without any problem? Have you tried inverting the image in software? If you cant do it for some reason I am prity sure I can get setup to do it without to much trouble. How about you do the transfer and I will provide an inversion service for a small fee? :-)

MovieStuff do you know of anyone else in the US that uses your equipment and does negative transfers at or around the same price as you do reversal? I was hoping to finally try out some of that Vision 200 but I don't really care to pay $200-$300 for an hour of telecine elsewhere.

If my reading of the supersound advert is correct does not the film come back with a digital copy (on tape ) as part of the package, which helps explain the very large price?
