Australia - where to buy/process film?

Post by Shion »

Hi all,

I know there's a few other Aussies lurking about here. :) Where do you guys buy your Super 8 film from, and at what price? And is it the variety that includes Kodak processing, or do you get the processing done somewhere else locally?

Cheers,

-Bon

I too am from the great southern land... (Perth)..
I have only used K40 so far but plan to use some neg film later on.

The place where I work stocks Super 8 film in the fridge (K40, Ektachrome & Tri-x) I think we're the only place in Perth I know of. http://www.cameraelectronic.com.au

I believe most other neg films have to purchased from overseas but can be processed in the eastern states but perhaps other Aussie Super 8ers can give you more info on this...

I AM ALSO FROM THE AUS LAND, JUST NORTH OF SYDNEY.
I BUY MY K40 FROM CAMERAHOUSE STORES, NOT ALL HAVE IT, BUT THEY CAN GET IT IN FOR YOU. IT COSTS AROUND AUD$22, BUT IF PURCHASED IN LOTS OF 5 OR MORE COMES DOWN TO APPROX.$18. PROCESSING IS DONE VIA THE PACK AND TAKES AROUND 2-3 WEEKS TO BE BACK. HOPE THIS HELPS.

8mm in SYDNEY australia

Post by swc »

I usually buy it at Ted's Cameras on Pitt St Sydney - it's in the back fridge. They're fairly cheap and sell Ektachrome and Tri X as well as Kodachrome k40 (if they're out, try fletchers down the road- a little more expensive)...

Sometimes I go to Sound Vision Stock shop in St Leonards, good prices but a bit out of the way most of the time- i would speak to them if you want bulk supplies. They also sell 16mm and 35mm, video, dat etc.

For processing I send K40 to switzerland. About 4 weeks turnaround from Sydney.

For Tri X and Ektachrome I use Film Plus in Victoria, but they can be slow sometimes, and they haven't been sending the films back on reels - only on hubs- which is a pest. They reckon there's none in Australia or something but you can buy them in bulk even off ebay so I dk what the problem is...

For Telecine I recommend Digital Pictures. I shot some 8mm of the Royal Easter Show at night and had it tranferred there and it looked great ( well IMHO !)

cheers...

When I was shooting In My Image I bought al my K40 directly from Kodak - they gave me a discount though so it worked out to be about $15.50 per roll - but I was orddering over 200 rolls -- but then when I didi pick up shots and ordered another 20 or so - they still gave me a discount -- try your local Kodak rep or the Mtion Picture Imaging Dept in Melbourne you might get a deal as well

Thanks for all the responses! Looks like there's plenty of options.

Thanks, that's especially helpful to know. I bought a bunch of miscellaneous filters and stuff from Camera Electronic about a year ago, and was very pleased with the service.

If I can ask here, what are your prices for those products? And do you buy/sell/service Super 8 cameras? (I almost bought a Canon 814XL-S on E-bay today, but was outbid in the last 30 seconds! Such is life.)

yeh we have some Super 8's here in the workshop, although i'm not sure if there working yet or not (its my job to fix em anyways as i'm one of techs!)

we do trade in super 8 & 16mm stuff. i got myself a nice 16mm bolex through work, although I haven't used it yet!

The dreaded Ebay! You really gotta bid in the last 5-10 seconds to have a chance.. its crazy on there. The thing I hate about Ebay is the descriptions of condition of cameras, esp when buying from some Germans. It is often totally wrong! But Super 8 equipment is pretty rare in Oz but I think we have a few boxes full of various Super 8 cams in storage so maybe in the next few months they may be on sale.....
